The Anthology’s Most Ridiculous Moments of 2012

If 2011 was the year of Miss America, friendly Sasquatches and granny nighties, then 2012 was all about psychedelic wine, chest hair and grown men singing “MMMBop.” Herewith, The Anthology’s most ridiculous moments of the past year.

9. The series I hosted for Vitamin Daily and Tourism Kelowna in which we treated wine-making with the stoicism it deserves.

8. The ridiculously fun Social Feed x The Anthology event where we wined and dined in support of Dress for Success Vancouver. The event sold out ridiculously fast — faster in fact than any Social Feed before it. You guys are the best! (Photos by superstar photographer Maurice Li.)

7. A trip to New York in which my girlfriends and I discovered just how far you can walk in 5-inch heels. (All the way across the Brooklyn Bridge, apparently.)

6. Then there’s the trip to Seattle in which my ladyfriends and I ate everything but cheesecake.

5. A lifestyle segment I did for PC Home’s Terra Gear on CTV in which host Aamer Haleem camped out on set.

Which brings me to number 4. Camping on the ridiculously beautiful Oregon Coast, where I failed miserably in my attempt at lumberjacking.

3. The fleeting moment in which photographer Barry Gnyp’s dog Lola agreed to pose for the Freedman Shoes SS/12 Campaign (which I directed) and the even more fleeting moment in which she posed exactly like the made-of-newspaper dog.

2. The time I scouted some of the best dressed festival goers at Coachella. And yes, this guy made the list.

1. Though really, for me, 2012 will always be the year I met Hanson at the PNE. Grown men singing “MMMbop?” Ridiculously irresistible.

Happy New Year, friends! See you in 2013!

Pinstagram | Beachside, Poolside and Roadside Glamour

The Anthology’s Pinstagram column marries the dream (Pinterest) and the reality (Instagram).

Don’t look down. Kauai’s Waimea Canyon is stunningly beautiful (if you’re not afraid of heights) + so is this model, who looks like she’s contemplating her own fear of heights.

Branch out. Trees lining one of Maui’s beaches (those are surfers in the distance) + trees lining a winter road (without any surfers for miles).

Nice weave. A woven beach bag my mom brought back from Mexico in the 1970’s + a woven hairdo that makes me want to grow my hair out.

Deluxe accommodations. When I went to summer camp in Maui as a teenager this was my cabin (which you can now rent) + what I remember most about those nights isn’t the midnight scuba dives (though they were wild) it was how starry the night sky was.

It’s a jungle out there. This was the trail leading through a bamboo forest in Haleakala National Park in Maui + and this appropriately illustrates how dense the forest was.

Birds on a wire. The sugar cane fields in Maui are the coolest + so are these birds.

Cool blues. I spent a day on a catamaran when I was in Maui + this is what I wore. <—That was a complete lie. I wore the dorkiest snorkel gear ever.

Bookmark | Miss Moss

In The Anthology’s Bookmark column we explore some of the most inspiring places on the wild, wild web.

Graphic designers always have the best blogs. They’re pure scroll-worthy eye candy.

Take Miss Moss, for example.

Edited by Cape Town-based graphic designer Diana Moss, it’s packed with her original photography, fashion picks and — my personal favourite — mood boards, all of which have a simple, yet colourful aesthetic.

Plus, her Cape Town City Guide lists so many cool boutiques it makes me want to go to there.

It’s a lovely glimpse at a creative life on the other side of the world. It’s worth scrolling through again and again. So bookmark Miss Moss  already and bookmark The Anthology while you’re at it.

[Images from Miss Moss of course.]

Trippin’ | Kauai’s North Shore

Right now, I’m in Hanalei Bay on Kauai’s north shore. Or, more specifically, I’m looking out over it. Let me tell you, this little gem of a spot should be on your travel itinerary — the hiking, the stand-up paddle boarding, the beach-laying…it doesn’t get any better.

But if you’re in Vancouver — or heading that way — I’ve shared a few of my favourite spots to eat, drink, shop and snowshoe on CheapFlights.ca. Happy trails!

Trippin’ | Disneyland for Grownups

You know how everything these days seems to be described as “Disneyland for grownups?” Well what if you go to Disneyland as a grownup, and not as a chaperone for small children? In this guest post, my sister Larissa does just that…

On a recent trip to California we were flying through LAX and I thought, why not stop in Anaheim for the day and have a date at the happiest place on earth? Would Disneyland actually be as happy as I remembered?

I hadn’t been to the mother of all theme parks since I was a small child. Turns out Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain are just as exciting as I remembered, though Space Mountain was even more terrifying. You know what’s changed though? The lines. Sometime between my childhood and now, they introduced the FastPass which means you can choose to skip certain lineups by inserting your ticket, getting a new one, and coming back later.

Kids these days really do have it all.  Then again, so do grownups.

Diary | Corks and Corky, My New (Four-legged) Golf Buddy

Is there anyone who doesn’t dream of owning a vineyard one day? It’s the life. Work, yes. All-consuming, sure. But a dream nonetheless.

When we were filming the series I hosted for Tourism Kelowna and Vitamin Daily (you’ll find a behind-the-scenes recap here) I wined and dined with Spierhead Winery owners Virginia and Brian Sprout, two people who are living the dream. Actually, Brian is living two dreams — he’s also a superstar photographer who took many of the stunning shots you see in Tourism Kelowna ads, brochures and the like.

When I visited their winery I employed their dog to help me cheat at golf (that’s Corky in the distance and my wicked golf stance in the foreground).

And drank wine straight from the barrel (which, it turns out, does not mean sticking your face under the tap). Take a look…

Thanks for having me, Tourism Kelowna, Vitamin Daily and Spierhead Winery! Thanks again, Bent Matter Productions!

P.S. Live the dream and follow The Anthology on Facebook and on Twitter @TheAnthology.

Diary | Making Like Mick Jagger at Ex Nihilo Vineyards

What do Mick Jagger and I have in common (aside from the fact that we’re both rock and roll legends)? We both enjoy the same drank: Ex Nihilo’s Sympathy for the Devil ice wine.

As I sipped and swirled my way along the Kelowna Wine Trails — where I visited wine cellar pyramids  and played vineyard frisbee golf — I couldn’t wait to try the nectar of the rock gods.

(Hi Mick!)

It was one of my favourite parts of the series I hosted for Tourism Kelowna and Vitamin Daily (you’ll find a behind-the-scenes recap here). So take a look and see if you can’t get no satisfaction…

Thanks for having me, Tourism Kelowna, Vitamin Daily and Ex Nihilo! Thanks again, Bent Matter Productions!

P.S. Make like Mick Jagger (I wish) and follow The Anthology on Facebook and @TheAnthology.

Trippin’ | Climbing Whistler’s Via Ferrata

I’m no rock-climber, but when you scale a via ferrata you don’t need to be. What you do need to be is willing to face your fear of heights. I climbed one with Whistler Guides the other weekend (read my recap on Vitamin Daily riiiiiiiight here.) and although this route wasn’t quite as terrifying as the via ferrata I climbed in the Rockies last summer, it seriously tested my resolve to reach the peak without taking the chairlift.

Boy, does it make you feel hardcore. See that pole falling sticking out of my backpack in the photo above? That’s an ice axe.

P.S. You know what else I had in my backpack? My tweet machine so follow The Anthology on Facebook and @TheAnthology.

Diary | Trekking Through the Kelowna Wine Trails, part deux

The Vibrant Vine isn’t your average winery. For one thing, they hand you 3D glasses the minute you walk in their tasting room. For another, their grape-pickers double as lunchtime musicians. And — my personal favourite — they have a vineyard frisbee golf course, where a few of my errant shots trimmed the vines.

At the Vibrant Vine, we shot part two of the Wine Trails series I hosted for Tourism Kelowna and Vitamin Daily (you’ll find a behind-the-scenes recap here). When we were taping the final scene of my psychedelic trip, proprietor Tony Lewis donned an, um, vintage costume (wine pun!) and I had NO idea.

Still had no idea.

Finally turned around and found out just how seriously they take their wine at the Vine.

Watch the clip to see how it all played out. Bonus: you’ll also find out how many Ogopogo puns you can fit into one Kelowna-themed video…

Thanks for having me, Tourism Kelowna, Vitamin Daily and Vibrant Vine! Thanks again, Bent Matter Productions!

P.S. Put on your 3D glasses and follow The Anthology on Facebook and @TheAnthology.

Trippin’ | Sunning Myself on BC’s Sunshine Coast

White sand beaches are nice and all, but I’d take a rocky coast any day. I love the dramatic waterfront of Hvar, Croatia, Antalya, Turkey and, a little closer to home, Egmont, BC, where I spent the other weekend on a cliff overlooking a fjord (that’s the view from my balcony in the photo above).

My favourite thing about the West Coast Wilderness Lodge where I stayed (aside from the fact that I was the first person to stay in my brand new room)? No cell reception, no internet —  just huckleberries that match my nail polish (Trout Pout by Butter London) and a nearby bake shop that serves killer freshly baked cinnamon buns.

Oh, and also the photo booth that was brought in for the wedding I attended there (congratulations Nadia and Jamie!). Like stunning coastlines, I can never get enough of those things.
