If you’re a foodie en route to Spain this year

Then my friend Surina has a plea for you: submit a reservation request to El Bulli. Now.

elbulli_olive-oil-cylinder

The world’s best restaurant only takes reservations in January for the entire year. And these reservations are very, very hard to get.

Which means even if you submitted your request on New Year’s Day there’s no guarantee you’d be eating there in mid-November.

Chef Ferran Adria’s creations are that good. Otherworldly, apparently. Or “alien food” as the amateur gourmet calls them.

Thanks for the heads up, Surina! Images from here and here and here.

There’s no place like home

Honestly. When it comes to candy-apple red shoes, The Wizard of Oz is the first thing that comes to mind. N’est-ce pas?

Except my Toto isn’t a terrier, but a calico cat.

Then there’s my bold “gold” necklace.

kelsey-getty

Where’s it from? Not Kansas, friends, but Italy. In the ’80s. Or so the story goes.

Night Lights

Are you as exhausted as I am? I’m still recovering from all the holiday dinners and parties and celebrations.

But January shows no sign of slowing down. We still have another Christmas to celebrate (hooray for Ukrainian heritage!).

Speaking of celebrating, on New Year’s Eve I wore a vintage jumpsuit and faux lambskin vest.

And my vintage snake skin clutch. (Neutral colour + distinct texture = sweetness.)

Plus, January means celebrating two of my best friends’ birthdays (yaaaay Ashley and Briony!) and the long-awaited Phoenix concert (honestly, I’m in heaven).

I’ll sleep in February.

Sucker for colour

Big pops of brightness get me every time. But how could you feel anything but comfy and cozy in a home filled with fresh flowers, colourful trinkets and stacks of books?

New Decade Resolutions

I don’t normally make new year’s resolutions. But 2010 is no normal new year. So I thought I’d make a list of things I resolve to do in the next decade. And here we go:

Train my beast. It’ll take that long.

leroy-puppy-nose

Throw a charity fundraiser. And invite each of you.

Watch storms in Tofino. Why have I not done this yet?

Buy a boat — yacht, dinghy, I’m not picky.

Get a fancy camera. Then figure out how to work it. Aha! This resolution is a two-fer.

Fall in love with Buenos Aires. I’m head over heels already. Can’t wait to actually meet in person.

Perfect the art of the dance party.

Volunteer.

Have an adventure. A really big one. I’m too chicken to sky dive, but I’ll think of something.

Cook once a week. For an entire decade? I’m committing myself to making more than 500 meals. Yeesh.

Man, I have a lot to accomplish before the ’20s are upon us. What about you? New year’s resolutions? New decade?

Forget the best and worst of 2009

I present to you the Anthology’s top ten most ridiculous moments of 2009. Oh what a year it was.

10. Most ridiculous 12 seconds of fame — Dancing on stage. On national television. Thank you, MTV Canada.

mtv-after-show-shoot

9. Most ridiculous “before” shot — the mumu that one Anthology reader compared to a hospital gown.

mumu-b4

8. Most ridiculous poorly behaved beast — my cuddly, four-legged vehicle of destruction. If I had shots of the holes he chewed in our walls, I’d include those too.

leroy-digging

7. Most ridiculous matchy matchiness – me and my dad wear rad plaid. Is that really so bad?

6. Most ridiculous water safety violation — diving head first into the Mediterranean. Never mind the fact that the water was about six feet deep.

5. Most ridiculous concert — my favourite fantasy-themed electronic dance rock band the WZRDZ. And they’ll be playing more shows in Vancouver in 2010, friends!

4. Most ridiculous place to set my camera’s timer and take a self-photo – Queen Elizabeth Theatre’s foyer. Have I no shame?

3. Most ridiculous reason to be recognized — my eel skin purse. But I suppose that’s what I get for cropping my head out of every photo.

2. Most ridiculous display of obsession — did I reallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreally need to write that many posts about Phoenix?

1. Most ridiculous puppy paws — the baby beast. Honestly Leroy. How did you walk with those things?

Here’s to an even more ridiculous 2010! Happy New Year!

“Hello, my name is MC. I am the Anthology’s husband.”

A guest post by my husband.

A few months ago I had a great idea.  I would write a “guest post” (as I understand these things are known in the blogosphere) about certain songs that I enjoy.  And this guest post would not be in the form of some cliche “top ten songs of 2009” thing, because it was September (or October maybe).  And then I forgot.  And now it’s the end of 2009 and I still haven’t done this super cool guest post.  So, without further ado…here are my top ten songs of 2009…

passion-pit-middle-east-cambridge

10.  We Were Promised Jet Packs – It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning.  (i’m a sucker for a heavy scottish accent)
9.  the xx –  Heart Skipped a Beat (honestly i could have picked any song off this album.  mostly because they all sound identical. but good)
8. Phoenix – love like a sunset part I (no words, no problem.)
7. The Dodos – Troll Nacht (folksy. but not too folksy.)
6. Poison the Well – Antarctica Inside Me (this list needed something a touch heavier.)
5. Sigur Ros – Inní mér syngur vitleysingur (i’m also a sucker for icelandic songs that I can’t understand. and yes, I know this was released in 2008, but I didn’t do a list in 2008. so deal with it.)
4.  Phoenix – Lisztomania (everyone likes Phoenix. and everyone likes this song.  but I liked it before them.)
3.Cymbals Eat Guitars – And The Hazy Sea (the guitar at 3:40 will blow your skull.)
2. Passion Pit – Moth’s Wings (epic.)
1. Passion Pit – Make Light (yes, passion pit at number 2 and number 1.)

honourable mentions: japandroids – young hearts spark fire / jay-z – empire state of mind / phoenix – countdown / friendly fires – kiss of life

Thanks MC! I’d add Phoenix 1901 because I could play that song on repeat for.like.ever. And Miley Cyrus Party in the USA because the DJ is playing my song and I feel alriiiiight. Want to contribute to the Anthology? (Huzzah!) Send me an email at theanthology@live.com.

The florals, the stripes, the gold

Screams the 70s, doesn’t it?

gold-rings

And that’s exactly when my dress was from.

striped-cardigan

It was one of my favourites long. But it was just too heavy to wear (all that polyester, you know).

red-eel-skin-purse1

Despite its stripey crocheted appearance, the sweater’s not vintage. I found it at Eden in Yaletown.

frye-boots

My boots? They’re Frye. And I will probably be wearing them until the 2070’s. That’s how much I love them.
