Giveaway | $100 to Shopbop! Helmut by Helmut Lang, anyone?

Who among you isn’t addicted to online shopping? That’s what I thought. Because I’m an enabler, The Anthology has teamed up with Shopbop to give one of you lucky ducks a $100 Shopbop gift card.

Looking for new espadrilles a la Grace Kelly? Use the gift card to grab a pair of Soludos shoes. Jewelry box looking a little empty? Put it toward Heather Hawkins jewelry (I especially like the horn necklace). Or if you want some bad-to-the-bone basics, put it toward some Helmut by Helmut Lang. Need more inspiration? Cruise the Shopbop blog.

For one entry: Comment on this post and tell us why you love shopping online. Because getting a package on your doorstep feels like a present even if you bought it yourself.
For two entries: Write on The Anthology’s Facebook wall.
For three entries: Holler @TheAnthology on Twitter.

The contest is open to Anthology readers worldwide (gift card is in USD). Contest closes 5:00pm PST June 28, 2012. Good luck!

[CLOSED] Congratulations Arielle Quan!

After | The Striped Floral Dress

This vintage dress was quite the find. Especially after giving it a few nips and tucks. Now instead of looking like your mom’s kitchen table cloth, it looks like your mom’s dish towel. There’s less of it, see?

I shortened it, belted it, climbed a tree in it and chased my dog in it. Soon enough I’ll be having seaside picnics in it.

When photographer Sherry Lu shot these photos in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park, I wore this dress with Converse Chuck Taylor Daintys (thank you, Converse) because walking my dog often turns into chasing my dog, so I needed to wear sensible footwear.

Another thing I need: a better-trained dog.

Diary | Glamour Shots

Photographer Mark Leibowitz was in Vancouver a few weeks ago shooting street style for Glamour Magazine. (Can’t wait to see those pictures, these are actually his shots from various fashion weeks.)

The man is a crazy talent — just peep his portfolio — and though he may look Canadian in his Teh Scarf, he’s from the Bay Area.

Photographer Paul Melo of Style Quotient captured much of Mark’s shoot on film (can’t wait to see that video!).

And it was funny to see them compare their photo-taking process. Paul declared himself more of a stay-still-and-set-up-the-shot-carefully kind of guy, whereas Mark and his subjects were moving all over the place.

Will my street style shot make it into the magazine? Who knows.

But thanks to this blog and my creative company Northill I feel like my life is one big photo shoot (see exhibits A, B, C, D and E).

And that’s a beautiful thing.

[Photos by Mark Leibowitz for Glamour Magazine except the one of the photographer himself. I took that.]

P.S. Facebook’s one big photo shoot so like The Anthology.

Style | Beachwear Trends on CTV

It may be June-uary in Vancouver, but I’m thinking sunny thoughts (and praying to the weather gods — I’m supposed to spend tomorrow on a yacht boat) so in a fit of optimism I stopped by CTV Noon News to talk summer beachwear trends: bright colours — yes, even for gentlemen — light fabrics, long dresses, and all sorts of summery things I can’t wait to see beach- and poolside.

I wore a pool blue Banana Republic top and Tabitha skirt, which makes it much easier to hook up my mic pack (though I still love you, JNBY dress).

Sprayed the heck out of my hair with Rusk W8Less Hairspray (the best!).

And got down to business. The dress on the left is part of the new Trina Turk for Banana Republic collaboration, which is now available in stores and online.

Matej (in red) is wearing menswear from Gap and Lillian is wearing a striped maxi dress from Old Navy with a denim jacket from Gap. Maybe if we’re lucky they’ll actually be able to wear these looks outside the studio soon.

[Thank you, Laura and Michelle, for snapping these pictures!]

P.S. You’ll find more behind-the-scenes shots on The Anthology’s Facebook page so get your like on.

Style | Summer Beachwear Trends on CTV

Summer. It’s all I think about all year long and now I actually get to talk about it. On Monday, June 4th I’ll be on CTV Noon talking beachwear trends. Among them will be the soon-to-be-launched Trina Turk for Banana Republic capsule collection, whose accessories (pictured above) I’m obsessed with.

Filled with bright colours and bold prints, the capsule collection is inspired by Southern California (one of my favourite places) and its mid-century aesthetic makes any old outfit that much more interesting. (The yellow and blue cuff is Trina Turk for Banana Republic, the gold beaded bracelets are my own.)

Pack your beach bag and set your PVR — my segment will air at 12:30 on CTV Noon Vancouver on Monday.

P.S. The Anthology has teamed up with Fulton to give away the most summery umbrella ever. You’ll love it almost as much as Kate Middleton does. Enter here!

Giveaway | Kate Middleton’s Umbrella

Or should I say…brolly?

That’s right, my friends, The Anthology has teamed up with the royal family’s official umbrella manufacturer (yes, they have one). Fulton wants to give you the umbrella that’s perfect for spring showers and duchesses: the birdcage. How do you enter?

For one entry: Comment on this post and tell us who you would have carry your umbrella for you (I’d choose Prince Harry).
For two entries: Write on The Anthology’s Facebook wall.
For three entries: Holler @TheAnthology on Twitter.

The contest is open to readers across Canada. Contest closes 5:00pm PST June 8, 2012. Good luck!

[CLOSED] Congratulations Tracy Kwan!

Before | The Striped Floral Dress

As far as The Anthology’s Before and After column goes, this “before” shot is far from the worst. In fact, this dress would be kind of cute as a costume. But it’s just that there’s so much of it, especially with those graphic stripes underneath the bold floral print. I couldn’t wear it without feeling like I was wearing an apron as a dress, so I’m tweaking this vintage piece to make it wearable.

I’ll share the “after” shots shortly.

P.S. Like The Anthology on Facebook and you’ll be the first to see them.

Trippin’ | Palm Springs

When you think of Palm Springs, you think of this sort of thing, don’t you? (This is actually one of Peter Granser’s wicked-rad pictures of Sun City from his book of the same name, but it’s fitting.) With early dinners, long golf games and a lot of quiet, your grandparents love it in the California desert, don’t they?

But can your grandfather do this?

Palm Springs is a blast even if you’re not living off a pension. Doing absolutely nothing but blasting Snoop on your poolside stereo, sipping sangria — which, when I make it, is more like a fruit salad with red wine dressing…

…and bobbing around on pool noodles. It’s my kind of vacation. Not travelling, vacationing. There’s a difference and I love them both (almost) equally.

The area’s beautiful too and not just in a sunshine-and-palm-trees kind of way.  These days, every ad campaign, music video and look book seems to be shot in the middle of the desert, and for good reason — the light is gorgeous, the landscape is eerily barren and the weather is usually incredible (though, as I learned from sweater-wearing experience, that’s not always the case).

Speaking of wearing things, I left my white linen suit and Panama hat at home and opted instead to rock a bamboo t-shirt dress c/o Soleone (comfiest thing ever), vintage beaded belt and Frye shoes. When I wasn’t wearing my swimming costume, that is.

P.S. Make like your grandma and like The Anthology on Facebook.

Thank you | National Post

Thank you, National Post, for featuring my striped self alongside Tom Mora, VP of women’s design at J.Crew. You’ll find my recap of the opening of the clothier’s new Vancouver store here.

Thanks, Evaan, for snapping that shot and thanks, Marc, for spotting it!

Style | Fresh Off the Runway at Joe Fresh

I swear I didn’t mean to dress like Joe Fresh’s PR reps (that’s Laura and Michelle of Tara Parker Tait PR) at the Fresh Off the Runway spring preview. It just happened that way.

I love me some colour — especially orange and cobalt. Those hues were meant for each other.

[Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses, JNBY shirts, J.Crew jeans, vintage bag]

P.S. You and The Anthology were meant for each other so like The Anthology on Facebook.
