Playlist | Deer Tick and Guards at Rickshaw

Deer Tick’s shows are famously raucous.

Or, as photographer Braden Paul, put it, “Absolutely nutty.” He was at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre last night to capture the Providence-based band’s blood, sweat and tears.

But mostly the blood. (That’s apparently what happens when you beat up your guitar.) It’s funny, because when you listen to Deer Tick’s albums, you might not picture a show like that coming from a band that sounds like they do — upbeat indie rock laced with a bit of country twang.

But that’s the beauty of live music, amirite? Speaking of beauty — you can download a free EP from openers Guards, which is filled with all sorts of gritty, Sixties-inspired tunes, right here.

Playlist | Tuesday Night Music Club

They turn down the volume on my microphone when I sing karaoke. (So much for that year of singing lessons.)

So when I was invited to Tuesday Night Music Club, it wasn’t to perform. The monthly series, which takes place at the Cellar on the last Tuesday of every month, brings together musical talent with industry pros (like yours truly).

Of the nine Vancouver-based artists I saw last week, two stood out as ones I’ll keep a close eye on. One was Luca Fogale, whose folksy sound seems to be of another time.

The other was Alexandria Maillot, whose voice and stage presence are primed for stardom. When introducing her take on “Rumour Has It,” she said “If I have one chance of being a YouTube sensation, it’s riding off Adele’s success.” I think she’s got a good shot on her own.

Playlist | Bon Iver and Other Lives

You already know and love Bon Iver, right? (If you don’t, take a moment to have a listen and then answer that question.)

other-lives-2

But do you already know and love Other Lives?

bon-iver-orpheum

I didn’t. But seeing them open for Bon Iver made me fall head over heels. I’m not usually one for sit-down concerts either, but the Orpheum is such a beautiful space (and I sat in the very front row because I’m a spoiled rotten brat) so it was one heckuva show.

orpheum-lights

As you’d expect, Bon Iver was especially, well… bon. (What. You expected me to resist that pun? Not a chance!)

P.S. I’m bon voyaging to the Bay Area so keep your eye on my tweet machine.

Playlist | Live at Squamish

I love music festivals. Love, love, love them. But I wasn’t able to attend Live at Squamish myself so I sent my brother Bryce Dundon who is a magical musician to cover it for The Anthology. Below are the highlights.

live-at-squamish
The sun was shining, the camp was bustling and the stage was set.
mattel-game-on-live-at-squamish
Live at Squamish has a very unique feel to it. It is about an hour outside of Vancouver and in such a short distance you travel to another world of mountains and evergreen forests.

The stages themselves are nestled in between massive glacier-tipped mountains, which would give any music venue a run for its beauty.

When we had some down time we were able to hit up the Mattel booth to swing in a quick game of Apples to Apples, which got far more competitive than needed.

One of the weekend’s highlights was Shad, a rapper from Ontario. He connected incredibly with his audience and put on a fantastic live show. Definitely a must-see for any hip-hop lover.

The major (pun intended) highlight of the weekend had to have been Major Lazer.
diplo-switch-live-at-squamish
I have been a long time fan, but first time performance viewer. Major Lazer’s Diplo and Switch earned my stamp of approval. Besides, the show had some of the most interesting… “acrobatic stunts” I have ever seen on or off a ladder.

Yes! And that is why they earned a spot on The Anthology’s Coachella 2010 highlight reel. Thanks again, Bryce! Glad you had a blast.

London Town | Eastern Vibes

In her second dispatch from London, Katie Burnett, a friend and beyond hilarious actress and writer living across the pond, retraces the places, films and books that make her most nostalgic

I grew up in Montreal. I was used to ice cold winters (my eyelashes freezing when my mother would send me out in a snowstorm for milk) and boiling hot, steaming summers (I would escape to summer camp in the Laurentians and jump into a cold lake to cool off). But the at-times unpleasant weather aside, the East Coast is such a vibrant place and I often miss it.

jack-kerouac2
With the film version of Kerouac’s classic On the Roadcoming out soon, I thought I’d revisit what I love about Montreal, New York, and the East Coast.
Anyone who knows Montreal knows about the Tam Tams on Mount Royal. Well, I grew up right across the park, and every Sunday morning I woke up to this. It was annoying for my parents whose bedroom faced the park directly, but I loved waking up to the familiar rhythm and beats of the Tam Tams. It’s a sound I miss. If you’re ever in Montreal, stop by!
film-still

I’ve been reading and re-readingOn the Road and it brings back a flush of memories of the East Coast. The film is expected to come out in the next few months, directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), staring Sam Riley as Sal and Garrett Hedlund as Dean. Judging from the few stills released, it looks like they’re doing a fab job of recreating the book.

imnotthere01

It got me thinking about I’m Not There, a brilliant film directed by Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Mildred Pierce) where six characters embody different aspects of Bob Dylan’s life and work. Parts of it were filmed on location in Montreal, and when I saw certain images (especially Heath Ledger’s scenes with Charlotte Gainsborough), I recognized them right away as my hometown. Great for some summer viewing!

cafe-wha

Perfect for summer reading, Down the Highway by Howard Sounes is a great biography on Bob Dylan, almost as good as his own autobiography Bob Dylan Chronicles Volume One. When I first went to New York, I literally walked around with this book, stopping in awe when I would hit places like Cafe Wha? where Bob Dylan started out. (On a different note, if you are in New York, make sure you also stop by Levain Bakery, home of the best cookies, located on the Upper West Side.)

I have to admit, I’m obsessed with biographies, and another great one is Allen Ginsberg, Beat Poet by Barry Miles. It’s a beautiful biography that paints an incredibly picture of New York in the post WW2 era. I read it in conjunction with Ginsberg’s famous poems Howl, Kaddish and Other Poems.

Paul Simon

And what story about the East Coast would be complete without Simon and Garfunkel? I had the privilege of seeing Paul Simon perform recently at the Roundhouse in Camden. My friend and fellow North American Samantha and I got there early and managed to get in the front row!

If you can believe it, that wasn’t just a private concert by Paul Simon for me – there were hundreds of people behind me. It was intimate and phenomenal. When he played classics, it brought me right back to my youth. The last time I saw Paul Simon, I was about 10 or 11, in Montreal. I grew up listening to, and loving, his music.

katie-and-parents

And since we’re reminiscing, here’s a shot taken by my family friend Judith Crawley when I was a baby in Montreal, with my parents. If that isn’t quintessential hipster 80’s, I don’t know what is.

Playlist | Kid Cudi at Deer Lake Park

Call it mellow.

kid-cudi-deer-lake-park

Kid Cudi plays sit-outside-on-a-summer-evening kind of music. And there are few spots in the city better suited to do that than Deer Lake Park.

kid-cudi

So in the um, pursuit of happiness, Vancouver-based photographer Braden Paul headed to the show to photograph Kid Cudi for The Anthology.

And his shots make me wish I were there.
