Waaaay after

I got this dress chopped, I’m finally posting it.

vintage-floral-dress

With its flowy (almost batwing) sleeves and its hippy dippy pattern it’s straight out of the 70’s.

leroy

What did it look like originally? Take a look here (my favourite photo is the one of Leroy being a skirt chaser. Literally.)

vintage-ysl-belt

Wore it with my vintage Yves Saint Laurent belt, which I found in Seattle and absolutely looooove, but cannot, for the life of me, figure out when it’s from.

open-toe-bootsAnd my open-toed booties, which I may have to tuck away very soon. Rainy season is approaching in my pretty little city (Vancouver) and they just won’t do for puddle jumping.

But for now, I’d rather live in denial and pretend that autumn is waaaaay far away.

When was the last time you walked to the post office…

picked out a postage stamp, came home, wrote something by hand, walked to the mail box and sent it off? It was a year ago, wasn’t it?

I knew it. Dream Sequins changed all that when she proposed her Postcards from my Hometown project.

glitter-pens

Now, I’m writing postcards like a madwoman to bloggers in Romania and the States. Trying to distract them from my 12-year-old boy quality penmanship with lots of colours (and just a touch of glitter).

postcard-from-london

I received a postcard all the way from London from Saskia of Saskia’s Spot, which is full of absolutely gorgeous photography, lovely, happy thoughts and words like “spiffing” and “chaps”.

stationery

It all makes me so, so happy because I might just love stationery more than anything else in the world. (Yes, that is a 24kt gold dipped maple leaf in the photo above. And yes, I am that Canadian.) The postcards are by John Derian (I found them at The Cross) and the letter holder they’re sitting in is an antique my ma found forever ago.

Admit it: you’ve been meaning to write something by hand forever, haven’t you?

I probably shouldn’t be promoting this

because it involves dancing on stage at the Roxy on national television, but Jessi Goes Home is now available on mtv.ca.

plaid-lamb-jacket

You can find a re-cap of the filming and see some of the radtastic outfits my ladyfriends wore here and here.

mens-tank

Even though it was shot in the middle of the summer I layered like it was October — wore my men’s H&M tank top with the necklace I assembled.

plaid-lamb-jacket-detail

And my rad plaid LAMB jacket.

disco-dress

When we went out I wore my one-shouldered, slightly metallic disco dress which was Rachel Zoe long until I had it chopped.

calvin-klein-shoes

Anyway, if you’re in Canada and you haven’t seen it, you can watch it here (you won’t want to miss our in-depth discussion about Twitter).

How do I love it? Let me count the ways

After reading the post about my little pirate bracelet, Lexie, my new favourite DIY-er, upped and turned her great-grandmother’s antique Thai bracelet into a very modern-looking wrist wrap.

lexies-bracelet

The gold-plated piece was missing a clasp so Lexie wrapped it twice around her wrist and tied it with a bold red ribbon. “It clashes brilliantly with my hair (since my hair is pretty much the same colour as Jessi’s) but as long as I don’t hold it up to my head I think I should be fine,” she says.

Lexie, it turned out so beautifully. Thank you so much for sharing!

What do you wear when you’re feeling all growed up?

A frilly, ruffly dress?

vincent-park-dress

Obviously.

sheris-shower-giftWore it to my first baby shower (congratulations Sheri and Paul!), which makes me feel like a true adult.

dior-scarfThe dress is from Vincent Park. The Dior scarf is from Printemps in Paris. Man, I would do anything to be there right now.

mcs-watch

The men’s vintage Omega watch (that I so desperately wish were mine) belongs to my husband. I’m considering trolling eBay for another men’s watch — maybe a big gaudy, cheesy one in yellow gold.mamas-earrings

I yanked the earrings — which are from New Mexico — from my ma’s jewelry collection. I’m going to wear them with everything. Always. Even though playing dress up in your mom’s clothes is hardly a grown up thing to do.

Dessert first

Served homemade ice cream sandwiches for dessert last night.

ice-cream-sandwiches-homemade

And when I say homemade, I really mean “home assembled” because I bought the cookies, put a scoop of store-bought ice cream between them and then shoved them in the freezer for an hour or so. It’s the kind of dessert I love (thank you, Elisa, for introducing me).

flower-vase

Dressed the table cheaply and cheerfully.

urchin-vases

With sea urchin bud vases I found at The Cross.

caprese-balsamic-reduction

But the biggest hit? The caprese salad — the easiest, delicious-est salad in the world. If you want a recipe for the balsamic reduction you can drizzle on it, you can find it here.

Thank goodness

there are people in my life who love vintage shopping as much as I do. Yes, there are those who just don’t have the patience to wade through the rough in order to find the diamonds.

val-vilBut my sister, thank heavens, is on Team Vintage.

shopping-cart

She, like me, mixes the old (her bag) with the new (her Banana Republic dress). And, come to think of it, she tends to stick to jewel tones too.

braided-headband

On an unrelated (but funny) note, she bought her headband because it reminded her of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Timoshenko.

value-village

But a quality shopping buddy is so key. Who else is going to spot the black leather skirt that would be perfect on you?

FYI (For Your Inspiration)

I absolutely love finding out what inspires other people. Me? I’m inspired by magazines, beautiful photos, gorgeous workspaces and other people’s mood boards.

inspiration-board

The clippings and cut-outs and collages and collections — they’re all absolutely fascinating. The one above is from Apartment Therapy.

selby-lanvin

The fish is my favourite part of this Lanvin mood board (photo from The Selby). Who knows how it might swim its way into a collection.

ny-times-jcrew-moodboard

Though sometimes it’s just about capturing a certain spirit, or mood, if you will. Which I think the leather camera case does perfectly in this mood board by J. Crew’s Frank Muytjens (photo from the New York Times).

kd-desk

And then there’s my own desk, which for years has housed the clipping of the old man — it makes me laugh because I own everything he’s wearing. Except for the corduroy pants.

What inspires you? Say the Anthology and I’ll love you forever.

I love that something from the late 80s/early 90s

can be considered conservative…

jones-new-york-vintage

even if it’s plastered with abstract turquoise, pink and red shapes.

vintage-skirt-detail

It’s by Jones New York, so you know it was meant to be quiet, tasteful. At least by the standards of the day.

vintage-jones-new-york-skirt1

I found it at F as in Frank (which is, on a side note, where Anthology reader Sally found her rad new belt and necklace).

j crew pocket square

And I wore it with a scarf! Well, actually a men’s pocket square from J. Crew, but I still think that means I’m sticking to my midsummer’s resolution.

I don’t mean to embarrass you…

but can I please just take a moment to tell you how much I love you guys? Your comments, your guest posts, your emails, your support on Facebook and Twitter make me such a happy little blogger.

And when you pass along awards? I just want to give you a big virtual hug.

stylish-blogger-extradots

I received the Stylish Blogger award from not one, but two of the most inspiring people in the blogosphere: Dream Sequins and Hauteworld, who tagged me to list the 10 things that create my unique style. So here we go:

1. I mix and match shamelessly.
2. I’m probably wearing your grandma’s old brooch.
3. I will wear my husband’s shirts, my sister’s shoes and my mom’s old necklaces. Together.
4. I like jewel tones. I have fair, fair skin so light colours can easily send my complexion into zombie territory.
5.  I think the perfect outfit is made of a dress from Value Village and shoes from Holt Renfrew.
6.  I’m probably wearing your grade school teacher’s skirt.
7.  Costume jewelry is my best friend, but I’m also really good friends with jewelry jewelry.
8.  I wear my skirts short.
9.  I douse myself in Stella by Stella McCartney.
10.  I love when clothes and accessories remind me of far-off places, which is why I tend to shop more when I’m traveling.

thank-you

I’d like to pass it along to a few glamourous bloggers: Shoes from Around the Globe (you blow my mind every day), Cafe Fashionista (your blog always make me laugh), Couture Carrie (you have such an eye), It’s a Beautiful Life (I wouldn’t have started the Anthology if it weren’t for you) and Option8 (your posts are dazzling, dahling).

circle-of-friends

The ridiculously kind Shoes From Around the Globe passed along the Circle of Friends award, which I’d like to award to my blogging BFFs (my BBFFs, if you will): Haute World (even though reading your blog tortures me), Dream Sequins (you are the one who is beyond gorgeous), Vancity Allie (you make me want to spend more time outdoors), Room 907 (I love you, man), The Extrovert (even though you’re my sister, you can still be my friend).

What would I do without you guys? No really. What would I do? Cook more?
