The Anthology

Baby sister week continues (she hates when I call her that)

When she’s not wearing custom-made dresses and vintage pieces, my sister Larissa is mixing menswear with accessories from everywhere.

men's plaid RL shirt

So comfy, cozy and casual, and so much more interesting than a t-shirt and jeans.

rissa-hat

Her hat’s from Bondi Beach, Australia.

mens-plaid-shirt

She’s wearing a men’s Polo Ralph Lauren shirt.

sandal-detail

Her sandals were custom made in Hoi An, Vietnam, where she also had her Indian teal dress and leather boots made.

Leroy’s a fan. Clearly.

This is why you guys are the best

I love reading your comments (and so does my mother) — they make my day (and my mom’s). And sometimes your comments open me up to a whole new world of wonder. Like this one from Franvis who commented on this post about Erlend Oye.

“Stumbled on your website ’cause of Phoenix, and now I find your an Erlend fan… I rest my case, you’re good.

When he was in Brussels, I met him in the park. We had a chat, he even drove my bike in the sun. Do you like his new project, the Whitest Boy Alive?”

I do now. I had no idea the Whitest Boy Alive was Erlend’s project (neither did my husband who saw them live at Summercase in Barcelona in 2007). I hadn’t paid any attention to the band until now. Thank you Franvis for changing that.

Vancouver-cherry-blossoms

You can find the video for my favourite song Burning here. And while you’re at it, take a look at the video for Misread by the Kings of Convenience, one of Erlend’s other projects.

cherry-blossomEvery spring I think of that video and how lovely it would be to spend the day under a tree playing the guitar and soccer.

If only I played the guitar or soccer.

My former roommate Julia supports good causes

A few weeks ago she did the MS Society Super Cities Walk in Toronto, where she now lives, and contributed this guest post.

As a transplanted and oft-homesick Vancouverite, it’s important for me to find things about the T-dot O-dot that I like.

jc-ms-walk-toronto

One of those is exercise for a good cause.

Another is gorgeous sunshine (even if those trees are a little barren).

And little guys like Finn here don’t hurt, either.

Julia’s inspired me. So I’m going to join Team Jack of Hearts led by Jack Stuart, a very charismatic kid who also happens to be this year’s ambassador for the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes.

If you’re in Canada, you can visit his site and join his team for the walk on Sunday, May 31st. And if you’re not, but you’d still like to support his cause, you can pledge Jack and support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Thanks again, Julia.

I’m going to go against everything I believe in

and insist that my sis keep this vintage dress exactly as it is.

rissa-dance-peach-dress

She picked it up on her travels with the intention of shortening it. But frolicking in fields isn’t the same in a short dress. And this is a frolicking kind of dress.

rissa-dance

She thinks it will just sit in her closet if she leaves it long. But I think in ten years when she finds that perfect event to wear it to, she’ll be happy she kept it floor-length.

rissa-dress-peach

There has been speculation that this was actually a bridesmaid’s dress in its day (the brooch is her own).

rissa-jump-dress

What do you think? Do you vote to keep it long and risk rarely wearing it? Or do you vote to cut it short so it’s more wearable?

I waited four months

For my baby sister Larissa to come back from her travels in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Silk dress custom Vietnam

And what did she come back with? A suitcase full of vintage clothes (more on that later), custom clothes and magnets (love souvenirs).

bangles

She had this dress custom made in Hoi An, Vietnam. The bottom part is made of Vietnamese silk in a colour I once heard described as Indian teal.

custom boots Vietnam

She also had her boots custom made in the same city. Leather and lovely.

Kiev bangles

Her red bangle is from an entirely different part of the world. She got it in Kyiv, Ukraine (this gal has been to 28 countries — 29 if you count Vatican City).

A custom-made silk dress and piles of bangles are beautiful. But when they remind you of your adventures? Doesn’t get any better than that.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Go! Canucks! Go!

They say you shouldn’t mess with success.

vancouver-canucks-old-logo1So for all four rounds (and there will be four rounds) that the Canucks play in the playoffs, I’m going to post an outfit that incorporates my husband’s t-shirt.

vancouver-canucks-skate-logo

This one, with my new favourite shorts (don’t let the acid wash fool you, they’re brand new).

canucks-old-logo1

You can find the first outfit here.

Now let me hear you: Go! Canucks! Go!

“You cannot post that”

Says my husband, “It looks… You look…”

mumu-b4

“You just can’t.”

mumu-before

Well, I had to. Because it’s my favourite “before” (my purple striped dress is a close second).

mumu1

I’m getting it altered and I’ll post the “after” shot in a week or so. But tell me, does it or does it not look exactly like what your Great Aunt Helga wears to bed?

My doggy’s got style

A few weeks ago we got the pup a new look. Out went his sissy hand-me-down floral collar, in came his real man-dog collar.

flat rivet dog collar

It’s  b-b-b-bad to the bone.

But when I started thinking about it, I realized my own Michael Kors tank top had similar flat rivets.

marc jacobs tank top

I know dogs and their owners are supposed to look alike.

But dress alike?

I’ve received so many kind, beautiful, encouraging emails

I wanted to take a moment to thank you.

thank-you

Thank you Abby, my long-lost cousin from New York; Leigh, a fellow Style Spy Girl of the Week and Anthology contributor; Maya, a miracle shopper who happened to find this very same pair of shoes; Ruth, whose email made my day week; and Marie (cannot wait to hear about your trip to Hawaii).

thank-s

Lauren, who I haven’t seen since the New Kids concert where I got this t-shirt (dress?) and thanks Betsey for featuring that same shirt on the DIY section of your blog.

thanks

Thanks again for joining me on Twitter, becoming my FBFFs, commenting on posts and contributing to the Anthology.

This is fun, you guys, keep it coming!

I give myself a lot of flack

for my lack of DIY skills. But truth is, I wear the tool belt in my family. I can install curtain rods (shower and otherwise) and hang photos like a mofo (see exhibit a).

writing desk

But I’m especially proud of my new desk. I made it using a butcher’s block my ma shipped here from Michigan and table legs I bought at Ikea.

Rocket surgery it was not. But still…
