Some things are better with your girlfriends

Bard on the Beach being one of them.

bard-on-the-beach

Saw Falstaff with my most theatrical friend Katie, instead of my non-synopsis-reading husband. And had the best night ever.

kelsey-katie-sunflare

Her favourite things about the play? Dean Paul Gibson, who played Falstaff, for one. “He was so on point with his comedy but also drew us in so well with his more dramatic speeches.” Such wise words from a theatre aficionado.

“And the barrels near the wine and beer,” she added, “Made me wish I lived on a winery in France.” That’s my girl.

bard-band

My favourite things? The courtyard, the live music, the ambiance, the close-to-the-beach-ness. It’s such an amazing way to spend a midsummer’s night.

And Falstaff as a play is entertaining, accessible, and action-packed. In the photo above, Prince Hal (Alessandro Juliani), Bardolph (Bernard Cuffling), and Ned Poins (Kevin K. James) laugh with Falstaff (Dean Paul Gibson, centre). Shot by David Blue.

vintage-dress-reworked

Wore a reworked vintage dress. (Remember this? Yeah, well, it was nothing a little tailoring couldn’t cure.)

vintage-dress-shortened

Had it altered at Oakridge Tailors on Cambie. And now it’s perfect for events. Shakespearian and otherwise.

Earrings from Mexico.

marc-marc-jacobs-sandals

Shoes are Marc by Marc Jacobs from Ogilvy in Montreal. Shoe shopping! Another thing that’s so much better with your girlfriends.

P.S. Want to support Cystic Fibrosis research? Watch this terribly embarrassing video by my lawn bowling team (so sorry I missed the recording). And pledge us here.

Sporting!

Kind of. Lawn bowling is more about socializing, costuming and leisuring than it is about athleticizing. At least when you play it like we do.

bowling

The second annual Vancouver Leisure Society lawn bowling extravaganza kicked off this week at the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club (the world’s most beautiful venue).

In honour of Eva Markvoort, the month-long tournament benefits the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Last year, they raised $11,000. This year, we’re hoping to beat that.

bowlden-girls

My powerhouse team? The Bowlden Girls. (With Kim Bowie, Dana Rudelier, and Larissa Dundon.)

dresses

Headless wonders that we are.

after-jungle-dress

Wore an asymmetrical jungle print dress.

jungle-dress-detail

‘Tis vintage and ’tis as close to a white dress as I have (unless you count my non-wedding wedding dress).

toms

The night was packed with more prep than you can shake a polo mallet at. My favourite dude outfit? Cuffed pink pants and Toms. So stylin. So good for the world.

As the Leisure Society says, why club when you can country club?

What are you doing this weekend?

Fighting juvenile diabetes? Well, what d’ya know, so am I!

team-jack-of-hearts-walk-to-cure-diabetes

This Sunday I’ll be at the Walk to Cure Diabetes with nine-year-old wunderkind Jack Stuart, who has been battling the disease since he was five.

But that’s not all I’ll be doing.

rickard-guy-moccasins

There’s also a Rickard Guy moccasin workshop (photo by Michelle Ford).

mint-dkny-detail

An old roommate’s art show, dinner with friends, dinner with family, bridesmaids dress fittings and fun things like that.

And you better believe I’ll be carting around this hippie dippy bag (nabbed from my sister, who found it in Thailand) because it’s been going with me everywhere from Coachella to the Commodore.

But back to Jack — if you want to help the mini man fight diabetes, you can join his team or pledge him here. See you on Sunday!

Let’s hit the road with Jack!

He’s inspired thousands. He’s raised $35,000 for diabetes research. And he’s only nine years old.

Jack Stuart, captain of Team Jack of Hearts, will be leading the charge at The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes in Vancouver. His goal? To raise $20,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

And I’m on his team.

Celebrate Transplant

A guest post by Dan Fumano.

Celebrate Transplant is an upcoming event aiming to raise funds for transplant research and promote awareness of the need for increased donor registration in BC (only 17% of British Columbians are registered donors).  It takes place Saturday, April 17 at the Medical Student & Alumni Centre near Vancouver General Hospital.

This second annual Celebrate Transplant event has been in the works for months, and this year it is dedicated to Eva Markvoort for all she has done for transplant awareness.  Sadly, Eva passed away last month just before her 26th birthday, ending her life-long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.  She was a remarkable young woman who touched thousands of lives, first through her blog 65_RedRoses, then through the documentary film of the same name.

65_redroses_eva_markvoort

Eva’s hope was to increase awareness about organ donation, encouraging more people to become registered donors. Reportedly, after the broadcast of 65_RedRoses, the rate of new registered donors in Canada tripled.

Celebrate Transplant is also an opportunity to appreciate Eva’s brilliant artistic and creative side.  The night will be the first public exhibition of a photographic collaboration with her friend Cyrus McEachern, a Vancouver photographer and medical student who helped organize this year’s Celebrate Transplant event alongside Joscelyn Carthy, a nursing student and board member of the Transplant Research Foundation of BC.

Although Eva will surely be in everyone’s hearts and minds, this isn’t meant to be a sombre event; rather, it should be a celebration of the beauty of transplant and the lives that it prolongs. Event details can be found here and tickets bought online here.

In honour of Eva

Eva Markvoort, whose heartbreaking battle with cystic fibrosis was chronicled in the documentary 65_RedRoses, would have been 26 today.

65_redroses_eva_markvoort

She lost her battle with the disease on Saturday. The legacy she leaves is one of hope. How many more people are organ donors because of the awareness she raised? How many more funds were raised? It would be impossible to measure because her impact was so widespread. Through her blog she touched people all over the world.

I never knew her, but like everyone who has seen 65_RedRoses, I fell in love with her charisma, her determination, her positivity.

65_RedRoses is returning to CBC’s Passionate Eye this Friday, April 2nd at 8pm (ET) / 5pm (PT). For those of you in the States, the directors are currently talking to broadcasters and will hopefully have an air date soon. For those of you in other parts of the world, I will let you know as soon as I do how you too can watch the film.

Want to honour Eva’s legacy? Become an organ donor (in BC visit British Columbia Transplant, in Ontario visit Ontario’s Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, in other provinces and states, Google “Organ Donation”), donate in Eva’s name to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and join the Reddy for a Cure group on Facebook.

They say it’s important to have goals

So here’s mine: I want to amass a huge art collection. I want a collection so massive I have to keep half of it in storage. I want paintings and photographs and sculptures. Tons of them. Everywhere.

And I’m on my way (just look at my living room wall). But there’s always room for more.

hearts-for-haiti

So if I were in Vancouver this weekend I’d be at Hearts for Haiti bidding my, um, heart out on the 50 + pieces up for auction. Because that’s another one of my goals: support charity fundraisers.

Go! This Saturday (March 6th) at Pacific Palisades Hotel, 1277 Robson Street in Vancouver. For tickets and info: HeartsforHaitiVancouver.org.

Mixed medium on canvas by Josy Frias.

We did it, friends.

We beat ourselves at our own game. We aimed to raise $10,000 for the Red Cross’ relief efforts in Haiti.

barelona-hope-in-haiti

And instead we raised more than $16,000 at Hope in Haiti. Maybe even more than $17,000. (Math was never my strong suit.) Either way, it’s incredible.

So thank you, Vancouver! And thanks again to Barcelona for being the hosts with the mosts.

Wow! You guys are generous!

We raised thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars for the Red Cross on Wednesday. And it was all thanks to those of you who came, volunteered, sponsored and supported Hope in Haiti.

Larissa and Kim, you guys blew my mind. A huge thank you to Barcelona for hosting it.

barcelona-hope-in-haiti

A huge thank you to all those who helped out at the event: Rica, Rachel, Alexa, Lara, Lib, Kim, Dana, John, Rob, Sonja, Connie, KellyAnn, Michael and Mike. How would we have sold so many t-shirts and tickets without you?

wzrdz-hope-in-haiti

A huge hank you to The WZRDZ, the funnest, funniest band in the world, and Vancouver’s favourite DJ’s: DJ Flipout and DJ Soo.

And a huge thank you to our outstanding auctioneer Gregory Rollo, who helped raise thousands and thousands for things like this autographed Gordie Howe jersey, which I got to wear for a few glorious minutes (photo by SoloLisa, whose hilarious recap of the event you can find here).

Were you there? Did you see the t-shirts everyone was wearing? They’re $30 cdn (plus shipping and handling) and net proceeds go to the Red Cross. So you can feel good about wearing one. Want one? Send me a note at theanthology@live.com.

Thanks to Matt MacEwing for the three photos.

Take me to Montreal

Just try to outbid me at the Hope in Haiti auction Wednesday night. The spa packages, the Opus Hotel in Montreal, the baseball signed by Alex Rodriguez. Yes, that Alex Rodriguez.

I’ve got my eye on them all. Plus, The WZRDZ, DJ Flipout, and DJ Soo will be there. And so will your favourite bloggers.

A few tickets are still available online so get ’em before they’re gone.
