After I’ve painted my little heart out

And cut my little heart out (man, that sounds way more violent than it should).

jean-cut-offs

And then ironed my little heart out (again: ick).

ironing

I’ve got some swell little shorts.

painted-shorts

Which are covered in authentic paint splotches (I did work in them to work them in).

steps

Wore them with my new (to me) leather vest.

painted-cut-offs

It’s a combination that’s rather b-b-b-bad to the bone, isn’t it?

Works in progress

So I bought a pair of Levi’s at a thrift store with the intention of turning them into cut-off shorts.

levis-jeans

But then I started thinking about the people who destroy their jeans to make them their own.

atlantis-home-jeans

Like the paint-splattered 501’s on Atlantis Home.

room907-apc-denim

And the APC New Standards that were dipped in the ocean and dragged through the sand on Room 907.

bookshelf-before

So I figured I’d wear my jeans as I made over this hand-me-down bookshelf.

craftsman-sander

I sanded down both (the bookshelf because I had to, the jeans because I wanted to).

working-jeans

And covered them in paint. Which was fun.

ray-ban

Wore my man-tastic new Ray-Bans, which replaced the beloved Prada sunglasses Leroy destroyed.

paint-pants

The paint’s drying right now, but as soon as it’s done I’ll post photos of both works (masterpieces? Fingers crossed).

If there was ever any doubt

that I am a crazy cat lady, these photos prove it once and for all.

fur

And if there was ever any doubt that this tie-dyed number is wearable as a dress, well, these photos should prove that too.

sandal-bernie

Plus, they provide solid evidence of the beautiful pedicure I got at Pure Nail Bar.

bracelets

And of my belief that more is better when it comes to accessories.

And my beloved beasts (if Leroy were in these shots, they’d give a really good indication of my zoo).

But back to my tie-dyed piece, when I need it to be office appropriate, I wear it tucked into a skirt. As is, it’s perfect for long weekends (I love you, BC Day!).

The best thing in the world

is seeing a big band in a small venue. Bloc Party was the perfect example. When they came to Vancouver a little while ago, they played a huge arena show in the modest little Commodore.

It was incredible.

most-serene-republic

On September 26th, Most Serene Republic will be at the Biltmore in Vancouver. It’s exciting because the Biltmore is teeny tiny and Most Serene Republic should be much bigger.

They have a new album out, but Content Was Always My Favourite Colour was always my favourite song.

Organizational behaviour

A guest post by my sister-in-law Jaclyn.

And no, I’m not talking about the dreaded pre-requisite for all you commerce kids. If you’re like me you are constantly looking for new ways to store and display your ever-growing jewelry collection. After one too many trips to Forever 21, and one too many days cruising European street markets, I have accrued more than one bedroom can handle. I decided it was time for an organization overhaul. After all, my travel treasures deserve to be flaunted. Isn’t that what all the bargaining was for?

florence-tray
These hand-painted wooden trays are from Florence and serve up everyday jewelry. Ok so the necklace isn’t so “everyday,” but it was designed by Elizabeth Taylor’s personal jeweler. Hiding it would be a style sin.

Most jewelry stores will sell you their display stands. This one is from Loulou Luv on Broadway, and I noticed some great ones at Front and Company on Main St. last weekend.

I found this coat hook in a sale bin at Urban Outfitters. It’s turned into a “statement necklace” hook and I like the Indian vibe. Coat hooks are great ways to turn a tiny wall space into dazzling displays.

This floral cake stand left me with such feverish glee, my mom thought I was insane. What a flirty and fresh way to stack your jewels. The best part is, if I ever decide to unleash my Martha, I can just switch up the pearls and rhinestones for cupcakes and tarts.

For now I think I’ll stick with the jewelry. Such an easy way to cut calories.

Want to write a guest post? (Oh good!) Send me a note at theanthology@live.com. Thanks again Jac for getting me a real deal on this dress and for writing the post on being a to-orist.

I didn’t make full use of this outfit

Because I didn’t go frolicking in any fields with flowers in my hair today.

purple-dress-from-turkey

And a long flowy dress like this begs to be frolicked in. Especially when paired with a vest and a long beaded necklace.

purple-dress-vest

I bought it in Turkey from a man named Erol who fell in love with my sister-in-law.

leroy-purple-dress

“Hiiiiii Jaclyn!” he would yell from across the street as she came out of our hotel. Morning. Noon. And night.

purple-dress-dancing

When I bought the dress, Erol gave me the Jaclyn discount. Because it’s not what you know, it’s who.

Would love to hear the call to prayer again

I miss sitting outside the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

blue-mosque-istanbul

Inhaling watermelon, gnawing on corn on the cob, and slurping back tea while the calls to prayer echo throughout the city.

blue-mosque-int

I have only been home a few weeks, but I’m dying to go back.

blue-mosque-from-hagia-sophia1

I’ve often thought if I could travel for a living, I’d be a very happy little camper.

It’s a beautiful life

As soon as Liv of A Beautiful Life returned from Hong Kong, she wrote a lovely guest post on that city (which only made me want to visit even more than I already did).

grand-bazaar-istanbul-turkey

Now that I’ve just returned from Turkey (more specifically, now that I’ve just returned from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul), I was all too happy to return the favour and write a little something for her blog, which you can find here.

turkish-dress

Speaking of Turkey, I fell in love with all the cats that owned the streets there. Crazy cat lady that I am, I would have adopted them all.

bernie

Not that this kitty is from there. He, like me, was born and raised in Vancouver.

bernie-and-turkish-dress

But back to the task at hand, you can read my guest post here.

Let’s hear it for the boys

Especially the ones who let you pilfer pieces from their closet.

white-shirt-mens

This shirt was my husband’s, but when the dry cleaner shrunk the sleeves, I nabbed it and have worn it with pants and shorts and skirts.

katherine hepburn white shirt

When I showed up to work wearing it, my friend Melissa pointed out that it is very Katherine Hepburn. (I found this photo, along with one of my favourite Ms. Hepburn, here.)

vintage-nautical-earrings

I wore that shirt with these vintage anchor earrings. If I wanted to go, umm, overboard with the whole nautical thing, I would rock the earrings with this shirt.

safety-pin-belt

And if I wanted to make this belt (which I clasped with a pin from a kilt) really pirate-y, I would wear it with this bracelet. Aaaaargh you thinking the same thing?

Bat wings and tie dye.

It’s a combination that sounds anything but elegant.

bat-wing-tie-dye1

Yet somehow, with this shirt/dress I bought in Turkey, it works.

bracelet1

It’s actually long enough to be worn as a dress (anywhere except the office). But I opted to tuck it into the linen skirt I bought in Dublin when I was visiting my sister there last summer.

bracelet-detail

Then there’s my amethyst bracelet, which isn’t quite as magic as my power ring, but it’s got to have some sort of special powers, right?

puppy-sniffing-lense

This shot of Leroy is by far my favourite shot of the series. Wasn’t even supposed to be of him.

leroy-on-couch

He really is turning into a poorly behaved beast (technically he’s not allowed on the couch). But not only do I laugh and take pictures when he misbehaves, I snuggle him instead of scolding him.

I will never be an animal trainer.
