Reading List | Can Reading Make You Rich?

When you have a newborn you spend a lot of time reading random articles at 4am. Or at least I do. So I thought I’d share a few of my favourite finds of (very, very) late.

English lit grads rejoice! Salon.

Aaaaah love stories: Tin House.

When Milla Jovovich tries on clothes, it’s art: Vulture.

There’s not really anything to say about the hats of Ascot except…: New York Magazine.

Spend 36 hours in Vancouver and you’ll want to move here (thanks, Elisa!): New York Times.

If you haven’t yet read Stephen King’s On Writing, you should. And if you’d like his thoughts the newfangled way: Reddit.

Beauty | Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée

One of the things that stuck with me most from my interview with makeup artist Caitlin Callahan was her tip that powder blush looks like makeup but cream blush looks like your own colour. I didn’t ask for her thoughts on cheek gelée but if she were to ask for my thoughts I’d give it major kudos.

This version by Josie Maran is made with coconut water (nature’s Gatorade) and though the colour looks intense in the pot, it goes on as light and bright as a hot summer’s day. The kind of day that you should be drinking plenty of coconut water. Because unlike these colours, dehydration ain’t pretty.

You Asked | Style in Vancouver

Claire writes:

I am visiting Vancouver for a few days from Australia and I want to explore some gorgeous stylish boutiques. I like your style so thought you might be able to recommend some?

Why yes, yes I can. These 16 only-in-Vancouver shops are just a few of my many, many favourites.

Main Street

Vincent Park, it’s tiny and it’s packed with collections you don’t often see in Vancouver.

Umeboshi, a shoe box-sized shoe store.

Eugene Choo for clothes and their Annex for accessories.

Gastown

LYNNsteven, which has one of the coolest change rooms you’ve ever seen — made of books.

The Block, a cornerstone of the district for years.

Secret Location, where this  photo was taken.

One of a Few, which you could say is one of a kind.

Charlie and Lee, the coolest!

Yaletown

The Cross, long one of my favourite decor stores (and now a client of mine).

Espace d., modern, minimalist home accessories.

Basquiat, for gorgeous clothes.

South Granville

Oliver and Lilly’s, where I interviewed designer Heidi Merrick.

Peridot, for homeware that probably won’t fit in your suitcase but is worth checking out anyway.

Kits and Point Grey

Rebecca Bree, who gave us this look inside her shop when it first opened.

Gravity Pope, which is packed with shoes galore.

Happy shopping!

P.S While you’re in Vancouver — or even if you live here — these 29 delightfully touristy things make for a fun weekend.

Home | Look Down

When we remodelled our kitchen, we had to tear up the 1970’s red-and-black Spanish-inspired laminate flooring (which I loved). Since we didn’t have a big budget for the new kitchen, I chose several close-in-colour ceramic tiles that were cheap as borscht, but when laid together had a sort of natural stone effect. (You can kind of see them here).

Every time my mom comes over she tells me how brilliant that was (because she’s my mom) but I think this multicoloured tile treatment is legit brilliant. And I’m not related to the architect at all.

Reading List | Beauty Wisdom From Your Dad

When you have a newborn you spend a lot of time reading random articles at 4am. Or at least I do. So I thought I’d share a few of my favourite finds of (very, very) late.

“Bad hair, don’t care, let’s build a fort” — beauty wisdom from your dad: xoVain.

The interview in which Kanye discusses the length of his ‘gevity: New York Times.

Matilda takes on Amanda — seven reasons child stars go crazy: Cracked.

Seven vintage shops to check out next time you’re in Seattle: Daily Candy.

So this is why you really don’t like the Facebook app: The Atlantic.

Now everybody’s going to be stepping up their Craigslist game: Jezebel.

The Cool Kids | The Diaper Bag That Doesn’t Look Like a Diaper Bag

Mom style gets a lot of flack (thank you, Tina and Amy!). So you gotta love anything that doesn’t look too mommy, the kind of thing you’d wear even if you weren’t toting around bottles and baby wipes.

The Stockholm bag by Ikabags is one such find. It looks like a tote you’d take to the beach instead of the tot pool, yet it has compartments for all the soothers, diapers and nonsense you can no longer leave home without. Plus it’s handmade in Paris, which makes sense since you’ve never heard anyone talk smack about mère style.

Pinstagram | Water and Watermelon

The Anthology’s Pinstagram column marries the dream (Pinterest) and the reality (Kelsey Dundon’s Instagram photos of places and faces in and around Vancouver).

Blushing. A bouquet from the lovely folks at Talk Shop Media and a peek into Julian Schnabel’s colourful home.

Wrap it up. A gift for my bebe from my friends (and Northill clients) at The Cross Decor and Design and a brilliant lace and craft paper wrap job out of Sweet Paul Magazine.

A fresh take. I have yet to open Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest cookbook but I’m confident it’s packed with fruits and veg, not unlike this watermelon and leaves print, which you can order here.

18 karat. A view of a gold-banded sunset at Jericho Beach and gold-leaf cuffs.

P.S. There are more photos where these came from so add The Anthology on Facebook.

Style | Skinny Fatties

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted a before and after. Okay fine. It’s been a really long while. But I was pregnant and what’s the point of scouting a dress that looks like your mom’s kitchen curtains and getting it reworked if it’ll only fit for one week? Exactly.

So. Anyway. Skinny Fatties had me feeling nostalgic. Because it’s as brilliant — and simple — as before and afters get. They’ll take your no-longer-favourite ties (or your dad’s ties or your baby daddy’s ties — hello Father’s Day!) and tailor them so they look a little more of-the-moment. And if you’d rather shop off the virtual rack, they have a collection of already skinnified vintage ties.

Either way, one size fits all.

P.S. I haven’t taken any photos of reinvented ties but you should follow @KelseyDundon on Instagram anyway.

Beauty | Lush Ultrabalm

The concept is simple, really. Lush’s Ultrabalm is like that old standby Vaseline but it’s made with ingredients like jojoba seed oil instead of petroleum. It’s a staple that you can use anywhere (even, apparently, your hair, though I use it as a before bedtime lip balm) and though its texture is not as silky smooth as the all-purpose jelly you grew up with, it’s my new go-to.

Would Tyra Banks be this excited about it? I don’t know. But I sure am.
