Interview | CityTV’s Breakfast Television

Back to school will always be my favourite time of year. (Even though I’m now the opposite of a student.)

breakfast-television-back-to-school-style

And the best part about back to school? Well, it’s not finding out which homeroom you’re in. It’s the new clothes, amirite? I stopped by Breakfast Television to talk men’s back-to-school style with host Dawn Chubai.

breakfast-television-amanda-makeup-artist

It was an early, early morning for me. (I don’t know how you hosts do it.) But I at least looked awake, thanks to Amanda Gangoso‘s makeup aristry.

breakfast-television-pre-show

While I was chilling, as I do often, with my male model entourage, one of them asked if I still get nervous when I do these things.

breakfast-television-old-navy

I have a confession to make: this was my very first time doing live television (and it’s a very different beast from pre-taped) so the answer would be yes. But it was fun! So, so, so fun.

breakfast-television-still-shot

As you can tell by this photo. This shot just might be one of the all-time best (thank you, Lisa, for snapping it!). Just look at the facial expressions on each and every one of us. Take a good, long look. Study them, if you will (we are talking about back to school, after all). I think that’s some Blue Steel on the left.

Want to see the segment? Wondering which of these models is single? You’ll find it all here.

Thank you Breakfast Television! Thank you Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy! Thank you Libby and Lisa! Thank you Michael, Holden, Chris and Yannick!

[My dress is Banana Republic Monogram.]

Trippin’ | Vancouver

One of my out-of-town ladyfriends is getting married in Vancouver this weekend (congratulations, Claire!). She hasn’t lived in the city for years but she’s bringing a gazillion guests from Europe with her so she asked for some advice on restaurants. I’ve upped the ante and started a list of the 29 best, most touristy things to do in Vancouver. Some of them involve eating. So grab your umbrella and sunglasses, friends (you never know what the day might hold). Let’s hit the town…

1. Go to Gastown. But skip the trinket shops and head to Vancouver-based boutiques like Lynn StevenOak + Fort, Roden GrayOne of a FewTwo of a Few, and vintage shops like Deluxe Junk and Gypsy Market.

2. Catch an up-and-comer at the Cobalt, the Biltmore, Fortune Sound Club, the Railway Club, or the Media Club. Or see a bigger band at everybody’s favourite venue, the Commodore. Check the Georgia Straight for listings.

3. Take a long walk on the beach. There’s nowhere more spectacular than Spanish Banks at low tide.

bard-on-the-beach

4. Get all Shakespearean at Bard on the Beach.

5. Ride the Grouse Mountain gondola if you’re feeling lazy and hike the Grouse Grind if you’re not.

6. Go to a place called Blood Alley — it’s every bit as lovely as it sounds — and then eat there (Salt and Judas Goat are great).

7. Eat sushi! Tojo’s is the most famous but you’ll find a gazillion other shops on every street (I love teeny tiny little Zipang on Main Street).

8. See the seawall at Stanley Park. Better yet, bike around it.

9. Get gelato on Denman and then walk to English Bay.

10. Go shuck yourself at Rodney’s Oyster House in Yaletown.

11. Sample sake and squid at Hapa Izakaya in Kits.

12.Get inspired at the Vancouver Art Gallery and then refuel on the cafe patio.

13.Head to Granville Island (locals love it too). Take in the madness at the market then wander through the artisan galleries on Railspur Alley before heading to Go Fish or Edible Canada for lunch.

14. Stroll through yoga clothiers and skateboard shops on fourth avenue, but first, stroll through the emerging Armoury District.

whitecaps-fan

15.Pretend you’re a sports fan and catch a WhiteCaps game.

16. Try a hot, hot caesar at the just-opened Oakwood Canadian Bistro in Kits.

17. Want to meet Vancouverites? Book at spot with the Social Feed.

18. Join the crowd on the patio at Six Acres and when it gets too cold, head across the street to the Diamond.

19. Hike to the Peak of Seymour.

20. Join the crowd of tourists on the patio at Bridges late in the evening (I used to work there — holler!).

21. Geek out at the Vancouver Public Library (it’s so pretty!) and then rock out at Library Square.

22. Make like a kid and spend all day at the Aquarium.

23. Sit on the patio and watch the sunset from the newly renovated Seasons in the Park.

24. Want to shop all the big North American clothing brands? Head to Robson Street.

25. Stuff your face with cotton candy at Playland.

26. Stuff your face with pizza at Campagnolo.

27. Take in the beauty inside the Museum of Anthropology and the beautiful views outside.

28. Fall head over heels (shoe pun!) at Gravity Pope.

29. Try a Japadog and then tell me what it’s like ’cause I’ve never actually had one.

What else do you want to add, folks? Share your favourite things to do in Vancouver in the summertime. Don’t be shy — get as cheesy and touristy as you like.

Before | The Printed Jacket

Because I know nothing brightens your day quite like some “before” shot ugliness, I present to you this specimen, which seems like it must be from the early ’90s.

printed-jacket-before

It’s just so ridiculous, so boxy, so outrageously unflattering, I had to post it twice (I want to make sure you really get a chance to take it all in).

printed-jacket-before1

You want more? I could keep going. But instead I’ll let you contemplate what it’s going to look like after it’s been tailored.

You’re welcome.

P.S. Nothing brightens my day quite like having your face on The Anthology’s Facebook page. So like it, will ya?

P.P.S. Take a look at some of The Anthology’s worst “before” shots of all time here. And here. Oh, and also here.

Vancouver | Sporting fanatics

I’m no sports fan. Unless, you know, my team’s future completely and totally depends on it.

kelsey-whitecaps-gameBut I love a good Vancouver Whitecaps soccer game.

whitecaps-fc-vancouver

I think it’s the fans. When it comes to crazy fanatics, the soccer crowd has every other sport beat. Hands down.

whitecaps-fan

The drumming, the chanting, the “Oo are ya”-ing. It doesn’t get any more infectious than that. And these are North American fans too. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to attend a game in a country where this sport is called football. Have you been?

[The vintage shorts I’m wearing used to look like this. Rosegold sandals. Glasses by Oliver Peoples.]

Northill | Take flight

Through my writing company Northill I’ve been working with some of the most amazing clients (holler!), one of which is the Flying Pigeon bicycle.

Take a look at the just-released video and tell me it’s not dreamy. Then take a look at TheFlyingPigeon.com and tell me it’s not the most compelling copy you’ve ever read.

[Music by Edo van Breemen, video by Adrian Buitenhuis, Bryant Bell and Redia Soltis.]

Style | Knit’s neat

Vintage shopping isn’t always about the weird and the wonderful (though there’s certainly plenty of that).

dog-and-vintage

It’s also about the classic and the ladylike. Like this made-in-Canada, midi-length knit skirt. It has a wonderful sheer quality that doesn’t quite translate in pictures but looks beautiful in person.

midi-skirt

Which brings up a really good point — always, always test your vintage dresses and skirts for the see-through-ness before leaving the house. So many of these gorgeous old pieces were made to wear with slips and it’s best to find that out before you arrive to a meeting with your editor.

prada-platform-espadrilles

You know what else is great to find out? How badly your lawn needs cutting. My Prada espadrilles have some serious platforms on them and the fact that they’re completely enveloped by the grass, well…

kelsey-and-pup

At least the beast doesn’t mind.

P.S. We’ve got some very exciting giveaways coming up so check back often!
