In The Anthology’s Bookmark column we explore some of the most inspiring places on the wild, wild web.

I am such a creative creep. I love seeing the work behind the work, getting a glimpse into the thought process — and the process process — of people who make beautiful things.

tumblr_nmg9vdfWnt1u2yk3ho1_1280

Which is why I love Ste. Marie Design’s Tumblr. The interior designer firm helmed by Craig Stanghetta is responsible for some of Vancouver’s most beautiful new restaurants, like Savio Volpe and Kissa Tanto, and their Tumblr feels like a moodboard they might have created when they were beginning any number of their projects.

It’s filled with interior design, sure, but also fashion and art, much of which is raw and refined, jagged and framed in gold.

It will make you want to quit your job and become a designer. Or at the very least, start Tumbling again. So bookmark Ste. Marie Design’s Tumblr already and bookmark The Anthology while you’re at it.

You asked | How do you stay on top of trends?

Prism and Chandelier

Rachel writes:

How do you stay on top of trends? Are there certain people you follow?`

There are many! Between Instagram, Pinterest, and good old-fashioned blogs, I feel like I’m living in trend overload. Blogwise, The Anthology’s Bookmark column is a great place to start; it’s stocked with sites run by creative types who are at the forefront of design and fashion trends. In terms of Instagram and Pinterest, many of my favourite people to follow are the creatives behind the stars, publications and brands — the editors, designers, photographers, and producers who pull it all together — because what they’re interested in now influences what they’ll be publishing or sending down the runway in a few months.

Love J.Crew’s social feeds? Follow their senior manager of social media Lucy Laucht. Love Kourtney Kardashian’s home? (So help me, I do!) Follow her interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Love Gigi Hadid’s street style? Follow her stylist Monica Rose.

You get the picture.

But, while staying on top of trends is key when you work in a creative field, knowing when to buck them is even more important. Your work as a creative person will be most valuable when you are well aware of everything that’s going on in the grand scheme of things, and you’re able to refine the zeitgeist into a voice/look/feel that’s all yours. This aesthetic will influence everything from your work, to your interior design, to your outfits, and even your social media feeds. I don’t mean that in the personal brand sense, I mean that in the sense that when you’re truly in touch with what you love, what works for you, and what inspires you, you’ll do work you’re excited by.

I was listening to an interview with Ira Glass of the podcast This American Life the other day (on the Longform podcast — more on that here) and he was talking about the fact that he makes a living off his taste. I thought that was an interesting way of looking at it. When you’re in a creative field you’re either making a living off your taste or off your talent and in some cases (like mine) both.

So flip through magazines, scroll through Pinterest and thumb your way along Instagram. But while you’re absorbing all that’s out there, pay close attention to what suits you, what you consider classic, what feels cutting-edge. Because good taste outlasts any trend.

Talking about | Back in the saddle

A collaboration with Canadian Tire.

Kelsey Dundon with bike

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a bike. Years, in fact. Almost five of them to be exact.

Bike details

And I’ve missed it.

Because Canadian Tire and I go way back, they sent me a bike (thanks, team!) from their brand new WOW Guide, which you can check out here. Or, if you’re feeling futuristic, check it out on the super techy Canadian Tire app (downloadable at the App Store) and get access to even more products (like, say, my bike) that you can order directly and pick up at your nearest Canadian Tire store.

Kelsey Dundon lean on bike

I wish I could tell you I picked this particular cruiser because it has seven speeds, a clothes-saving fender and blah blah blah bike specs, but the truth is I picked it because I liked it.

bike details 2

The caramel seat, the white tires, the Portlandia-approved bird — they spoke to me. I added a bell, a basket and a helmet (because bike accessories are accessories too).

KD bike ride

Et voila! Turns out it’s just like riding a bike.

The Cool Kids | Minimocs

Rose gold minimocs

I just took an inventory. Turns out all my favourite kids’ shoes are from the west coast: cozy hand-knit slippers by Padraig Cottage for winter, cool water-friendly sneakers by Native Shoes for summer. And for little ones who are just learning to walk, these beauties by Minimoc.

Minimoc flat lay

They were a gift from my friend Surina and while I don’t want my littlest one to grow up too fast, I am looking forward to outfitting her in them. They’re the best of the best (coast).

Pinstagram | Pink sofas and red suits

The Anthology’s Pinstagram column marries the dream (Pinterest) and the reality (Kelsey Dundon’s Instagram photos of places and faces in and around Vancouver).

chairs

Seating arrangement. My midcentury Danish chairs that replaced the sofa that used to sit under that window + a blush sofa that could replace anything it wished to.

flowers

In bloom. My desk looks like spring + so does Rachel de Ravenel’s bench (photographed by Diana Koenigsberg for C Magazine).

Pools

Wading pool. A sunny weekend in Whistler + a sunny series of pools.

kids

Backyard. I put up a tire swing in an effort to turn our backyard into a playground + I should just give up because this backyard hideaway is the coolest.

red

Seeing red. I stopped into Coach to meet with their team and shoot with my bright red phone + a red hot suit.

Listen to this | Radiolab, Longform and Invisibilia Podcasts

Urban Ears Headphones

Serial changed my life. Okay maybe not my whole life, but definitely the cooking and driving parts of my life. Before Sarah Koenig brought Adnan Syed’s life into mine, I had dismissed podcasts as something only for the super techy and super nerdy (which is what I used to think about blogging and here I am!).

Binge-listening to the first season of Serial opened up a new world for me, to the point where I’m now that (techy, nerdy) person who relays anecdotes from This American Life at dinner parties. In case you haven’t had the privilege of dining with me lately, here are three of my favourites.

Radiolab
My love for this show runs deep. It weaves fascinating, heartstring-pulling stories out of subjects I’d normally have zero interest in, like figure skating, genetic manipulation and Candid Camera. Which episodes should you start with? Translation, Juicervose, and Live: Tell-Tale Hearts featuring Oliver Sacks.

Longform
I have not been able to write as much as I would like to lately, but I have been able to listen to other people talk about writing lately. Longform showcases intimate conversations with writers of nonfiction like the always fascinating Heather Havrilesky, Cheryl Strayed, and Tavi Gevinson.

Invisibilia
An offshoot of Radiolab, Invisibilia delves into the invisible forces that govern our lives — physics, fear, Batman, and the like. The second season starts soon (June 17th) so catch up on the first season, or at the very least on the Entanglement, Our Computers, Ourselves, and How to Become Batman episodes.

Happy listening!

Style | Wear It Well, Wedding Edition

Kelsey Dundon Global Television

The only question more daunting than what to wear in a wedding? What to wear to a wedding! Too formal and you’ll be uncomfortable, too casual and you’ll look like you didn’t put in the effort. Drama rama!

KD at Global 750

So for my latest instalment of Wear It Well on Global Television, I compiled three ensembles to wear to three different types of weddings, featuring looks from Aritzia, Aldo, Joe Fresh, Call It Spring and Le Chateau at Metropolis at Metrotown.

Watch the clip here. Thanks for having me, Global BC! Thanks, Hayley Hudson, for the photos! Thanks, Jerome Insorio, for your help!

Style | Pretty/Rugged

unnamed-11

Imagine what your most artsy friend would pack for a weekend away. Then imagine an entire collection inspired by your artsy friend’s vacation wardrobe. You’ll find that collection at the newest location of Scotch & Soda (the first in BC), which just opened up at Richmond Centre, and is filled with silky striped overalls, tropical bomber jackets and some serious denim.

KD Scotch & Soda blouse and jeans

My picks? A soft, polished blouse and a pair of super-distressed skinny boyfriend jeans (thank you, Scotch & Soda!).

Clutch square

A look that would be perfectly finished off with an oversized polka dot clutch…

unnamed-9

…and a spritz of something citrusy.

unnamed-12

Then there’s the menswear! Oh, the menswear! I am a big, big fan. (I actually included some men’s Scotch & Soda in a recent segment.)

unnamed-10

So grab your most artsy friend and start packing for the weekend.

P.S. The Scotch & Soda rep who hosted me told me she did her final school project on The Anthology. Hi Jessica! I’d totally give you an A+!
