after + before

At first I was afraid, I was petrified that I wouldn’t be able to make something wearable out of leather, chain and pirate charms.

But I’m sooo happy (and a little surprised) with how it turned out.

And it was simple simple simple to make. I braided ultra suede strips with gold chain and hung charms off of it. I made it long enough to be a necklace or to wrap three times around your wrist.

Aaaaargh you as excited as I am about it?

long-black-floral-b4

Speaking of things I’m excited about, this dress is currently at the tailors getting shortened. It’s pretty as it is, just a little too heavy.

Won’t be nearly as fun for the puppy when it’s shorter, but it will be far more fun for me. I’ll post the “after” shot next week.

Summer summer summertime

There is nothing — absolutely nothing — that reminds me of summertime as a child quite like freezies do. Fighting over the red ones, trying desperately to suck all the colour right out of the ice, cutting the corners of your mouth on the plastic edges. That’s summer to me.

graeme-freezies

This gorgeous photo was taken by Graeme, an art director I work with (you can find more of his photos on Flickr under Grrambo — a nickname I take full credit for). He took this photo of freezies in his backyard. “And then I ate them all,” he says.

Speaking of happy things, I’ve compiled my own happy list which you can find at the beeeautiful .v.

Ahhh perspective.

It makes my baby beast look like a gigantic beast (pretty good shot of his lazy ear, though, don’tcha think?).

blue-vintage-dress-pleats

I don’t wear too many hemlines that fall below the knee, but I think there’s something nice about a long strapless dress so I didn’t have this vintage piece hemmed.

beaded-bracelets

My sister made the green bracelet, I bought the zig-zaggy one on the street in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

vintage-necklace

My sister also gave me this thrifted necklace for Christmas along with a gift certificate to Value Village (half joke, half perfect present).

And I’ve still got her boots. Neener neener neener.

(On a side note, I love the light in this part of my backyard in the morning. The sun shines from the east and reflects off my neighbour’s window to the west and creates this beautifully artificial look.)

Two weeks

Until a little of this:

And a whole lot of this:

kaputas-beach-turkey

I could not be more excited for Turkey — all the beautiful mosques, mosaics and magnificent hotels (that are way out of my price range). Have you been?

The second photo is from this site. I’m unsure of the source of the first one.

A happy list

.v — an Australian graphic designer — stocks her beautiful blog with happy lists, which I always find so inspiring (who doesn’t love contemplating what brings you joy?). She was kind enough to contribute a list of her own here.

vogue-tearsheets

It could be 5000 things, she says, but she’s narrowed it down to 5:

1. warm autumn days.. not too hot not too cold… right now is my favorite time of year.
2. french films.. just because.
3. books… all books. novels, picture books.. there is nothing better than being lost in a good book.
4. vogue.. i have stacks of them. i love flicking through them whenever.. and the fashion is always amazing.
5. picnics.. sitting with friends in the park eating good food is always wonderful and very happy

Thank you .v! You’ve inspired me to watch Amelie again.

If a pair of boots and a pair of sandals had a love child

that offspring would be my brand new footwear.

loita-boots

Just got these cut-out Loita boots today and I cannot wait to wear them.

With a summer dress, they’d be perfect for work.

red-necklaces

My giant loopy necklace is from Barcelona (where I was this time last year) and the shorter one is from Vienna (where I wish I were right now).

But back to more important things, how would you wear cut-out boots? Would you wear them with jeans?

My most daring before shot yet

Normally my before shots look like this or this and someone else turns them into magical after shots (I’m not much of a do-it-myselfer). But this before shot is a little different, and I’m not going to lie to you, a little terrifying.

pirate-bracelet-before

Using leather, chains and charms from Country Beads I’m going to attempt to make a pirate-themed bracelet. And I really, really hope it turns out.

Playing tourist in my pretty city

I’ve heard many Vancouverites say they love coming home after traveling because this little city is so pretty. Though I prefer Departures to Arrivals, I do see the appeal.

granville-island-vancouver

Of all the tourist destinations in Vancouver, Granville Island has to be my favourite. I practically grew up there — taking dance lessons, playing in the water park, and more recently: eating.

The other day we went to Go Fish, a tiny little Fish and Chips shack that’s so out of the way, my Ma has never even managed to find it (it’s on the False Creek seawall across from Granville Island).

go-fish-sign

While I took photos like an out-of-towner, a very nice man gave my husband advice on what to order (the cod).

It’s the perfect spot to dangle your feet over the edge of the seawall with a basket of fresh fish and chips in your lap. Like you’re on vacation.
