Mixing and matching the mismatched

Take two bright, bold vintage pieces, add them together and what do you get?

plaid-jacket

An outfit fit for a BBQ.

silk-blouse-detail

The blouse is a silk vintage Ralph Lauren number (as if the golf buttons weren’t enough, it used to have shoulder pads before I took a pair of scissors to them).

All that red and all that gold — there’s nothing subtle about it.

What could be more fun than tacky on top of tacky?

Wore this sweater to brunch

Spent forever on my friend’s sunny patio. And now I have the most wicked forearm tan.

black-gold-sweater

Love that this sweater is sparkly gold (and glitters like a disco ball when it catches the light).

black-gold-sweater-detail

It’s straight out of the eighties (hard to believe, I know).

gold-belt-detail

The belt is the one I wore on the Style Spy.

My favourite part of the sweater isn’t the razzle-dazzle glitter, though. It’s the batwing sleeves. How can you not want to flap your arms wildly in something like this?

Twenty-seven years after it was made

I finally saw Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (thank you, Melissa). The best part? The costumes. No question.

My favourites were the ones that looked like the designers envisioned the future with a forties influence through the eyes of the eighties.

No wonder Charles Knode and Michael Kaplan won the BAFTA award for best costume design in 1983.

The looks were edgy and elegant. The perfect combination.

Celebrate!

It’s a weekend full of best friends’ birthdays, brunch with old friends and a get together for my little mama.

Paris

I’ve been charged with making the playlist for Saturday night. Will feature my top ten favourite dance party songs and what else? Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice? Jesse’s Girl by Rick Springfield? Whoomp! (There it is) by Tag Team? What am I missing?

Baby sister week continues (she hates when I call her that)

When she’s not wearing custom-made dresses and vintage pieces, my sister Larissa is mixing menswear with accessories from everywhere.

men's plaid RL shirt

So comfy, cozy and casual, and so much more interesting than a t-shirt and jeans.

rissa-hat

Her hat’s from Bondi Beach, Australia.

mens-plaid-shirt

She’s wearing a men’s Polo Ralph Lauren shirt.

sandal-detail

Her sandals were custom made in Hoi An, Vietnam, where she also had her Indian teal dress and leather boots made.

Leroy’s a fan. Clearly.

I’m going to go against everything I believe in

and insist that my sis keep this vintage dress exactly as it is.

rissa-dance-peach-dress

She picked it up on her travels with the intention of shortening it. But frolicking in fields isn’t the same in a short dress. And this is a frolicking kind of dress.

rissa-dance

She thinks it will just sit in her closet if she leaves it long. But I think in ten years when she finds that perfect event to wear it to, she’ll be happy she kept it floor-length.

rissa-dress-peach

There has been speculation that this was actually a bridesmaid’s dress in its day (the brooch is her own).

What do you think? Do you vote to keep it long and risk rarely wearing it? Or do you vote to cut it short so it’s more wearable?

I waited four months

For my baby sister Larissa to come back from her travels in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Silk dress custom Vietnam

And what did she come back with? A suitcase full of vintage clothes (more on that later), custom clothes and magnets (love souvenirs).

bangles

She had this dress custom made in Hoi An, Vietnam. The bottom part is made of Vietnamese silk in a colour I once heard described as Indian teal.

custom boots Vietnam

She also had her boots custom made in the same city. Leather and lovely.

Kiev bangles

Her red bangle is from an entirely different part of the world. She got it in Kyiv, Ukraine (this gal has been to 28 countries — 29 if you count Vatican City).

A custom-made silk dress and piles of bangles are beautiful. But when they remind you of your adventures? Doesn’t get any better than that.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Go! Canucks! Go!

They say you shouldn’t mess with success.

vancouver-canucks-old-logo1So for all four rounds (and there will be four rounds) that the Canucks play in the playoffs, I’m going to post an outfit that incorporates my husband’s t-shirt.

This one, with my new favourite shorts (don’t let the acid wash fool you, they’re brand new).

You can find the first outfit here.

Now let me hear you: Go! Canucks! Go!

My doggy’s got style

A few weeks ago we got the pup a new look. Out went his sissy hand-me-down floral collar, in came his real man-dog collar.

flat rivet dog collar

It’s  b-b-b-bad to the bone.

But when I started thinking about it, I realized my own Michael Kors tank top had similar flat rivets.

I know dogs and their owners are supposed to look alike.

But dress alike?

I love to live vicariously

And when that’s vicariously vintage shopping, well all the better. This guest post is from Leigh, a fellow Style Spy Girl of the Week, who just moved to Kelowna from Vancouver.

My first mission as a new Kelownian (if that’s the correct phrase) was to secure a handful of go-to vintage shops and cute, unique, one-of-a-kind boutiques. I always think it feels a bit like a treasure hunt when you’re in a new city, scouring the side streets and excitedly exploring the little neighbourhoods, searching for that perfect gem of a store.

Frock Kelowna

In my quest for some new fashionable discoveries, I unexpectedly came across a charming consignment boutique called Frock.
