Let’s hit the road with Jack!

He’s inspired thousands. He’s raised $35,000 for diabetes research. And he’s only nine years old.

jack-of-hearts-jdrf-vancouver

Jack Stuart, captain of Team Jack of Hearts, will be leading the charge at The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes in Vancouver. His goal? To raise $20,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

And I’m on his team.

Want to help him achieve his goal? Of course you do. Join Team Jack and walk with us Sunday, June 13, 11:00 at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Or show your support and pledge Jack. Now let’s hit the road!

This time around

Is the name of a beautiful song off Radio Dept.’s latest album.

floral-skirt-flip

And it is the perfect title for this post.

radio-dept-clinging-scheme-cropped

Because this skirt is, if you ask me, much better this time around.

floral-skirt-after-blurry

When I first scouted it as part of a twofer two piece, it looked like a garden threw up all over it.

blouse-skirt-before

But I find separating separates to be very effective (see the blouse here).

floral-skirt-detail

Because in smaller doses, this beautiful paint-splotchy print is downright delightful.

floral-skirt-twirl

P.S. A Token of Gratitude is another Radio Dept. song. And it’s also what I owe you for following me on Twitter.

Met Roddy Doyle

And those of you who didn’t take literature in school ask: Who?

tweed-jacket-striped-shirt-driving-shoes

He’s the Irish author of The CommitmentsThe Woman Who Walked into Doors and now, The Dead Republic. And, if the reading I attended is any indication, he would make the coolest dinner guest ever.

roddy-doyle-autograph

Nerd that I am, I had him sign The Dead Republic. The unfortunate thing about it? It’s volume three of a trilogy. Which means there are about 800 pages standing between me and it.

old-man-tweed

The event must have inspired me. Because the next day I showed up dressed like a middle-aged author: tweed jacket, driving shoes and all.

tweed-jacket-striped-shirt

With some bohemian touches: hippie dippy necklaces. I made the red and silver one, and I found the pendant in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

playa-del-carmen-courtyard

It’s from a little shop tucked away in a picturesque courtyard off 5th Avenue (between Calle 6 and 8, in case you’re headed there).

rust-coloured-driving-shoes

My driving shoes? They’re from a far less quaint source: Cole Haan.

tweed-jacket-vintage

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some reading to do.

P.S. Speaking of books: Facebook!

It’s a twofer

Your grade two teacher wore something very similar to this, didn’t she?

blouse-skirt-before

Long skirt, exceptionally shoulder-padded shirt — it’s a foolproof combination, isn’t it? So classic. So vintage.

blouse-detail

My favourite thing about a twofer is that you can treat the separates as separates and wear them, well, separately.

blouse-vintage-floral

All I needed to do with the blouse was remove the shoulder pads and it was ready to rock.

flowers

Easy peasy.

blouse-vintage

And all I needed to do with the skirt was take it to the tailor’s (D.I.Y. is so easy when you have someone else D.I. it for you).

blouse-after

So how did the skirt turn out? Who knows! It’s still at the tailor’s. But I’ll let you know as soon as I do.

P.S. Tweet, tweeps, tweet!

Black on Black

I’m pretty sure Grace Coddington would approve of wearing it head-to-toe but, Anna Wintour most certainly would not (have you seen The September Issue?!?).

all-black-outfit

It doesn’t matter, though, because neither were in Vancouver last night. And neither were at the jam-packed first-anniversary party for JK Models at Leone.

black-on-black

It was so much fun to see such beautiful faces (I’m talking to you Liv, Kim, Adela, Nicole, OliviaNiki, Anya, Erin, Lisa, and Raul).

80s-gold-earring-snakeskin-clutch

And it was so much fun to wear my new-to-me giant spiral gold earings, which are — you guessed it — straight out of the 1980s.

sequins1

When you’re decked out in ridiculous accessories from such a ridiculous decade you can’t help but have a blast, even if you’re dressed in the most solemn colour in the rainbow.

P.S. Like the Anthology? Like Facebook? Might I suggest this?

Went on a little road trip

to Steveston, which is — what would you guess — 20 minutes outside Vancouver?

dog-in-car-hanging-out-window

And yet, it is an entirely different world.

west-dyke-trail-steveston

You’ve been, right? Probably even eaten the fish ‘n chips at Pajos (if you haven’t yet, you’ve got to).

hand-knit-sweater

We walked for hours along the trails. And boy, did it feel good to stretch our legs.

green-alien-kite-steveston

And watch people fly kites.

sweater-detail

Wore a thrifted sweater, which was hand knit, probably by someone’s very lovely grandmother.

steveston-great-blue-heron

And my acid washed cutoffs.

bulky-hand-knit-sweater

Weekends in the summer. I’m telling you — they’re the best things going. The week has only just begun and already I’m asking myself: where to go next?

P.S. Be a tweetheart and follow me on twitter, won’t you?

Gimme Gimme More! Gimme More! Gimme Gimme More!

Sound familiar? It’s Britney Spears. And it’s also many of you.

wedding-dress-vintage-ballet-length

Because after I posted a few teaser shots of the vintage wedding dress transformation, y’all were hollering for more. And who am I to deny you?

vintage-wedding-dress-before

Here’s a refresher: I found this late 50s/early 60s dress at a thrift store and I had to have it. (I didn’t even know at the time that it has my initials sewn inside. Creepy, but true.)

wedding-dress-modified

So I had it hemmed.

wedding-dress-hem

And I specifically left the two layers of tulle longer than the under layer.

wedding-dress-detail1

It’s more dreamy, more floaty, more ballet-y that way.

wedding-dress-hemmed-vintage

And it was perfect for the opera (Marriage of Figaro? Wedding dress? I mean, come on.)

P.S. I love when you like the Anthology on Facebook.

With apologies to Mr. Hammer

You remember these, right?

mc-hammer-pants-red-jeans

Well, they’re back! And they’re better than ever!

vintage-90s-red-jeans-reworked-shorts

Because they are now shorts! Which makes me want to, um, jump for joy.

reworked-vintage-jeans

They’re still as pleated as ever, they’re still as acid washed as they were originally, but now that they’re shorts, they’re downright funky.

vintage-makeover-red-jeans-shorts

It’s an extreme makeover, Hammer pants edition. And it’s a miracle that they turned out as well as they did. I’m not going to lie to you, I was worried there for a minute.

P.S. I like when you like the Anthology on Facebook.

Mixed media

Went to an art show last night at Leone celebrating Vancouver artist Gina Miller‘s  mixed media works (which are beeeautiful!).

gina-miller-vancouver-artist

And it got me thinking about mixing media.

vancouver-street-fashion

Like coupling the soft flowiness of a silk blouse…

matty-m-shirt-detail

…with the roughness of a wool jacket.

mens-vintage-military-jacket-detail

And this isn’t just any wool jacket either. It’s a men’s battledress jacket, no less. I found it at an antique fair last year (note the date on the label) and it’s been keeping me warm as I battle the Vancouver weather.

street-style

My clutch? It’s woven reeds embellished with snakeskin cutouts.

street-fashion-vancouver

Aha! More mixed media!

P.S. Tweet tweet (that’s Twitterspeak for “follow me”).
