Trippin’ | Vancouver

One of my out-of-town ladyfriends is getting married in Vancouver this weekend (congratulations, Claire!). She hasn’t lived in the city for years but she’s bringing a gazillion guests from Europe with her so she asked for some advice on restaurants. I’ve upped the ante and started a list of the 29 best, most touristy things to do in Vancouver. Some of them involve eating. So grab your umbrella and sunglasses, friends (you never know what the day might hold). Let’s hit the town…

1. Go to Gastown. But skip the trinket shops and head to Vancouver-based boutiques like Lynn StevenOak + Fort, Roden GrayOne of a FewTwo of a Few, and vintage shops like Deluxe Junk and Gypsy Market.

2. Catch an up-and-comer at the Cobalt, the Biltmore, Fortune Sound Club, the Railway Club, or the Media Club. Or see a bigger band at everybody’s favourite venue, the Commodore. Check the Georgia Straight for listings.

3. Take a long walk on the beach. There’s nowhere more spectacular than Spanish Banks at low tide.

bard-on-the-beach

4. Get all Shakespearean at Bard on the Beach.

5. Ride the Grouse Mountain gondola if you’re feeling lazy and hike the Grouse Grind if you’re not.

6. Go to a place called Blood Alley — it’s every bit as lovely as it sounds — and then eat there (Salt and Judas Goat are great).

7. Eat sushi! Tojo’s is the most famous but you’ll find a gazillion other shops on every street (I love teeny tiny little Zipang on Main Street).

8. See the seawall at Stanley Park. Better yet, bike around it.

9. Get gelato on Denman and then walk to English Bay.

10. Go shuck yourself at Rodney’s Oyster House in Yaletown.

11. Sample sake and squid at Hapa Izakaya in Kits.

12.Get inspired at the Vancouver Art Gallery and then refuel on the cafe patio.

13.Head to Granville Island (locals love it too). Take in the madness at the market then wander through the artisan galleries on Railspur Alley before heading to Go Fish or Edible Canada for lunch.

14. Stroll through yoga clothiers and skateboard shops on fourth avenue, but first, stroll through the emerging Armoury District.

whitecaps-fan

15.Pretend you’re a sports fan and catch a WhiteCaps game.

16. Try a hot, hot caesar at the just-opened Oakwood Canadian Bistro in Kits.

17. Want to meet Vancouverites? Book at spot with the Social Feed.

18. Join the crowd on the patio at Six Acres and when it gets too cold, head across the street to the Diamond.

19. Hike to the Peak of Seymour.

20. Join the crowd of tourists on the patio at Bridges late in the evening (I used to work there — holler!).

21. Geek out at the Vancouver Public Library (it’s so pretty!) and then rock out at Library Square.

22. Make like a kid and spend all day at the Aquarium.

23. Sit on the patio and watch the sunset from the newly renovated Seasons in the Park.

24. Want to shop all the big North American clothing brands? Head to Robson Street.

25. Stuff your face with cotton candy at Playland.

26. Stuff your face with pizza at Campagnolo.

27. Take in the beauty inside the Museum of Anthropology and the beautiful views outside.

28. Fall head over heels (shoe pun!) at Gravity Pope.

29. Try a Japadog and then tell me what it’s like ’cause I’ve never actually had one.

What else do you want to add, folks? Share your favourite things to do in Vancouver in the summertime. Don’t be shy — get as cheesy and touristy as you like.

Style | Amira Earrings

If I had to list a few of my favourite things, that list would go a little something like this:

earings-from-portland

1) Traveling
2) Pretty, artsy things
3) Anthology readers (I’m totally sucking up — did it work? Or are you peeved I didn’t list you first?)

amira-jewelry-portland

And whatdyaknow, these earrings combine the first two things on my list.

Handcrafted by Portlander Amira Mednick, they’re made of three different pieces of some sort of canvas (though I’m no textile expert) and they’re cut to look like feathers from afar. I picked ’em up at Tender Loving Empire in my new favourite city and I highly recommend you go and do the same. But if you’d rather shop from the comfort of your couch, you can find something similar on Etsy.

P.S. The Anthology has some reeeeeeeally big giveaways coming up.

P.P.S. Add The Anthology on Facebook and you’ll be the first to hear about them.

Trippin’ | Portland!

I didn’t get it. I had no idea how a city so close to Vancouver, BC (and even closer to Vancouver, Wa) could possibly feel so different. But that was before I spent quality time in Portland.

keep-portland-weird-cropped

That city feels like another world because it’s all about the made-in-Portland, designed-in-Portland, brewed-in-Portland, recorded-in-Portland.

portland-farmers-market

And, in some cases, the grown-in-Portland.

bingo-sandwich-portland

Have you been lately? If you haven’t, make Portland your next road trip destination (you can thank me later).

vintage-jacket

When you’re there you’ll want to start with breakfast at the Farmer’s Market. It’s a beautiful thing. Especially when it consists of a sandwich from Bingo Sandwich, cold-brewed coffee from Cafe Velo and freshly picked raspberries from one of the gazillion vendors who offer them. (My jacket, in case it isn’t obvious from the shoulders, is a vintage piece that’s so light, it’s perfect for cool summer mornings.)

guild-portland

Then hit the road on foot and explore. You could walk forever in that city.

jackpot-records-portland-oregon

And you could get lost in its one-of-a-kind shops like Jackpot Records, Lulu Vintage or Powell’s Books (I’m not exaggerating about getting lost in Powell’s Books, it’s got so many stairwells going so many different directions I felt like I was trapped in an M.C. Escher drawing).

portland-design-collective

Doddle around the Portland Design Collective, which is half vintage shop, half local design museum, and all beautiful open airy space with friendly, chatty staff.

leah-duncan-pillows-tender-loving-empire

Then pick up locally made accessories for you and your home at Tender Loving Empire, which is also a record label.

kelsey-saturday-market1

Then hem and haw over which handcrafted piece to add to your collection at the Portland Saturday Market (which, you’ll be happy to know, is open on Sunday too). While you’re there, get all hopped up on sugar and caffeine with a Cloud Cap Coffee Works Mexican mocha, made with homemade vanilla syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate and whipped cream. (My crochet jacket and suede shorts are also vintage. Actually, so is my bag. Yeesh. I’m so predictable.)

amnesia-brewing-portland

Then spend your evening in the beer garden of a microbrewery (this one is Amnesia Brewing on Mississippi Avenue in North Portland).

And at that point you’ll probably find yourself planning your next trip to the City of Roses. See you next summer, PDX!

P.S. I joined the cult of Portland and then I wrote an article for the Province.

P.P.S. You’ll find a few of my where-to-stay, what-to-eat picks for Portland on Vitamin Daily.

Bookmark | Of Another Fashion

In The Anthology’s Bookmark column we explore some of the most inspiring corners of the internet. This week’s was submitted by Boston-based food blogger Camille of Broken Record (whose premise is “lousy photos, good food”). Take a look…

tumblr_li85wgddmt1qfu6z3

Of Another Fashion is this amazing project being done on the fashion histories of women of colour in the US (although there’s plenty of overseas stuff too – people’s photos of their moms before they immigrated, for instance),” she says. “It’s crowdsourced so people submit their own photos.  So it’s cool conceptually as well as having amazing content.”

Toyo Miyatake Studio Rafu Shimpo Collection

The site, curated by Minh-Ha T. Pham, an Assistant Professor in the History of Art & Visual Studies Department and the Asian American Studies Program at Cornell University, is full of gorgeous vintage shots from all over the world as well as the stories behind them. It’s well worth bookmarking.

Besides, I want that dress.

P.S. Want to add more to your bookmark bar? Well, start with The Anthology (obviously) and then take a look at the first and second features in the series.

Style | Colour pop

I have a girlfriend who chose orange as her favourite colour when she was little because she felt sorry for it (everybody always seemed to pick pink or purple).

holts-orange-gloves

I think she would like these gloves. I spotted them at Holt Renfrew’s fall preview and fell in love right away. Ain’t nothing more ladylike than a pair of gloves (Audrey Hepburn would totally agree) and there ain’t nothing more fun than bold, bright colours (Crayola would totally agree).

Wait a minute. Summer has barely begun in Vancouver and I’m already excited to dress for fall? What is wrong with me?

Before | The Printed Jacket

Because I know nothing brightens your day quite like some “before” shot ugliness, I present to you this specimen, which seems like it must be from the early ’90s.

printed-jacket-before

It’s just so ridiculous, so boxy, so outrageously unflattering, I had to post it twice (I want to make sure you really get a chance to take it all in).

printed-jacket-before1

You want more? I could keep going. But instead I’ll let you contemplate what it’s going to look like after it’s been tailored.

You’re welcome.

P.S. Nothing brightens my day quite like having your face on The Anthology’s Facebook page. So like it, will ya?

P.P.S. Take a look at some of The Anthology’s worst “before” shots of all time here. And here. Oh, and also here.
