Sasquatch Sightings

Last weekend, Vancouver photographer Braden Paul trekked to Eastern Washington to cover the 10th annual Sasquatch Festival for The Anthology. And boy, are his up-close-and-personal photos beautiful. After four days and countless bands in the world’s most beautiful venue (have you been to the Gorge?!) these are a few of the highlights…

The electrifying (and glittery) Sleigh Bells.

The beautiful, badass Robyn.

One of my very favourites: the New York-based, world-influenced Yeasayer.

Atlanta’s indie darlings Deerhunter.

Canada’s own K-OS.

And Major Lazer‘s hyper hype man, who will soon be performing the not-quite-suitable-for-work set at Live at Squamish.

Stay tuned, friends, there are more Sasquatch highlights to come and you better believe they include this man.

What a transformation!

I’m still in shock.

surinas-dress-after

This dress is the sartorial equivalent of the Biggest Loser. Because it used to look like this

surinas-dress

How’d my tailor work that magic?

surina-detail

Well, she lopped off the sleeves, widened the collar and removed the old-lady lace and tie-dyed appliques. So now it’s pure country-chic.

She also, of course, shortened the hem so it’s the appropriate length for chasing a Bear.

Not that it helped me catch him. That yellow lab is quick.

P.S. I’m going to be lecturing at Simon Fraser University so from now on I’m only going to respond to “Professor”.

Your very own helicopter: a giveaway!

Remember collecting helicopter seeds on your way home from school when you were young?

justine-brooks-pendant

Award-winning Vancouver designer Justine Brooks does. She’s used those sycamore blades to cast gorgeous sterling silver pendants (that would look great with a crisp white shirt). The best part? Justine Brooks wants to give a sterling silver helicopter pendant (valued at $110) to one of you lucky Anthology readers! So how do you win?

For one entry: Comment on this post and tell us how you’d style it. (I’d wear it solo around my neck, but I’d pile on the bracelets.)
For two entries: Write on The Anthology’s Facebook wall.
For three entries: Holler @TheAnthology on Twitter.

The contest is open to readers worldwide and the winner will be chosen on Wednesday, June 8th. Good luck!

UPDATE: And we have a winner! Congratulations Cassie Lee!

Chk Chk Chk it out

Never have I been so excited to meet an artist (and I’ve met Weird Al Yankovic, for crying out loud).

nic-offer-kelsey-dundon

And never has that artist been so excited to meet me. I mean, just look at the excitement on !!! (Chk Chk Chk) frontman Nic Offer’s face. He can barely contain himself.

electric-owl-main-street vancouver

The New York-based dance punk band played the opening weekend of the Electric Owl, Main Street’s new izakaya restaurant, live music venue, cold beer and wine shop, and sake bar.

kelsey-anya-nicole

The show was a real hoo’s hoo (owl pun… get it?) with Anya from I’m the It Girl (sporting wicked blue nails) and Nicole from Le Mode du Jour.

And it was everything I dreamed it would be.

electric-owl-crowd

Raucous, rambunctious and slightly cooler than the last time I saw them under the blazing desert sun at Coachella.

Notice how there were no photos taken at the end of the night? That’s because we were the sweatiest bunch of people this side of a marathon.

P.S. I was at the Electric Owl’s opening party and you can read all about it here.

We’ve got your good deed for the week covered

And yes, it involves shopping. The first-ever Fashionista’s Ball takes place this Sunday with bonafide vintage treasures, designer pieces from just a few seasons ago, fine jewelry, a silent auction, door prizes and more.

vintage-dress-detail-fashionistas-ball

The best part? All proceeds go to the United Way.

fashionistas-ball

The Women United in Philanthropy have collected more than 3000 perfect-condition pieces from some of Vancouver’s most stylish women (including many donated by you wonderful Anthology readers — thank you!).

So spread the word, bring your friends and shop selflessly! The Fashionista’s Ball takes place this Sunday, May 29th, from 10:00 – 4:00 at 1095 West Pender Street in Vancouver.

See you there!

UPDATE: I just heard that the Fashionista’s Ball raised an astounding $70,000 for the United Way of the Lower Mainland this weekend. An amazing, amazing feat! Kudos to all of you who donated, volunteered and shopped for a worthy cause.

We Heart Art!

You know what’s fun? Art openings.

kelsey-balloon-installation

Especially when the opening is at the gorgeous Rennie Collection in celebration of Turner Prize-winning Brit Martin Creed.

Sure, there were broccoli stamps, video installations, a mechanized piano and living statues. But none of us could get over the balloons.

justin-balloon-installation1

I mean, this installation is essentially an Ikea ballroom for grownups.

briony-balloon-installation

Honestly. When was the last time you saw someone over the age of six this giddy?

Martin Creed’s Collected Works will be at the Rennie Collection until October.

P.S. Take a look at this interview with The Anthology and it’ll become very, very clear why this writer did not go to art school.

The clothes! The tunes! The moves!

hairspray-stanley-theatre-cameron-barnett

I sat down with Broadway star J. Cameron Barnett to talk about his latest role — as Seaweed J. Stubbs in the Stanley Theatre’s production of Hairspray the Musical. And yes, he broke out into song during the interview. Watch the clip on VitaminDaily. Thanks again, Cameron!
