Number 10 | The Anthology’s Most Ridiculous Moments of 2011

The countdown is on, my friends! New Year’s Eve is coming so soon I can already taste the champagne. Which means it’s time for one of my favourite traditions on The Anthology: the top ten most ridiculous moments of the year. We’ll recount them over the next ten days, starting with…

10. That time I made eyes at an invisible man wearing a fur coat. It’s the epitome of great television, really. I took TV host Melanie Pineda and her camera crew vintage shopping, I twirled around 14,286 times in the span of three minutes and somewhere in the midst of it all I shared a moment with a well-dressed invisible gentleman. Take a look.

Thanks again, Jerome Insorio, for grabbing that still frame!

P.S. What earned the 10th spot on The Anthology’s list last year? This.

Style | The Wish List Collabo

A little while ago I asked you guys what you were wishing for and boy did you send in some great ideas. None of you said you were wishing for world peace, mind you, but your picks are so fun and unexpected I won’t hold that against you…

Allie
1. A lovely little heart ring by Verameat (also available at Vincent Park in Vancouver).
2. Shawl from Marche St. George (thanks to your Vitamin Daily post!).
3. Dolce Vita Kimora Sweater (also available at Vincent Park in Vancouver).

Keltie
4. I would add this little lovely to my wishlist!

Kat
5. I’ve been coveting this LL Bean Town and Field Leather Tote for a few Christmases now.  Santa doesn’t seem to be taking the hint.  LL Bean Totes are always on my list, in any form.
6. I’m a big fan of all things moose (it’s a very very long and complicated story that ends in pyjamas)… so when I found this, I instantly dropped some pretty major hints.  Plus it’s under $20!
7. I’m also a Moleskine devotee and have always wanted one of their “Passions” lines of notebooks.

Melissa
8.
While my wish list is full of all things shiny and sparkly (think gold watch and sequin pumps), at the top of my list is something I never thought I’d see… a practical item. The Milly Luggage Lock Camille Coat is stunning. A way to keep warm while looking stylish this winter? Sign me up!

Judy
9. My hubby and I are on a tight budget this year. This way, he can pick and choose items he wants to get me and they won’t break the bank!

Steph
10. Am I the only one completely obsessed with the fashion on Once Upon a Time? Not only are the princess gowns fairytale-worthy, the ‘real-life’ characters’ have some fantastic outfits, too. Main character Emma has a penchant for leather jackets, especially those from ocean drive leather, located in Vancouver. Love Emma’s signature red jacket, but I’ve my eye on the gorgeous camel one.

Kumi
11.  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling: A funny girl who can write? Big time girl crush alert.
12. Michael Kors Quinn Clutch in Kiwi: I love the clean, modern lines of this clutch. The contrast of the soft vachetta leather goes well against the gold clasp, and the fresh color makes this easily wearable year-round.
13.  Small crystal encrusted oval cup pendant necklace by Alexis Bittar: This one is my personal favorite – beautifully crafted and easily transferable from day to night.

Larissa
14. I’m hoping for an iPad because it’s a fun toy and my computer is breaking my back from carrying it around too much.

Michelle
15. A matte bangle from The Twisted Series by hk +np studio.
16. ANY painting from the lovely and talented Andrea Armstrong.

Bella
17. I have been wanting to complete my bedroom for sometime now and I feel these gorgeous nightstands would do the trick!

P.S. There are plenty more wishes where these came from. Take a look at wish lists by Boston-based food blogger Camille Barichello, stylish mommy blogger Anna Cohen and makeup artist Emmy Beaton.

Linked | Dace sample sale, Flare’s Twitter party, photographer Gem Salsberg and more…

The Anthology’s list of what’s new, what’s now and what’s next…

1. Dace in spades. One of Vancouver’s favourite designers Dace is holding a sample sale with Becky Brisco and Pure Soy Candles Thursday, December 15, 11am – 8pm. Everything’s up to 70% off at 300 – 76 W. 6th Avenue, Vancouver.

2. Tweet! Tweet! Flare Magazine is having a Twitter party on Friday, December 16th and you’re invited!

3. Storm Season. Photographer Gem Salsberg’s solo exhibition opens Friday, December 16th, 7-10 pm with music by local jazz band Black Gardenia at HiVE Vancouver (#210-128 West Hastings Street). Exhibition will be on view until January 31st.

4. Silver bells and baubles. Vancouver jewelry designer Justine Brooks is holding a holiday sale with 20-75% off Monday Dec. 19th 12pm – 7pm  #217 – 119 West Pender, Vancouver.

5. Walk this way. Alife is having a footwear sample sale at 411 West Cordova (3rd floor) on Friday, December 16th 2-6pm, Saturday, December 17 and Sunday Dec. 18, 11am – 5pm.

6. Shop for a cause. Karma Exchange funds the philanthropic work of Vancouver-based Create Change, which has sent more than 1,000 girls to high school and provided more than 20,000 people with clean drinking water in Northern Ghana since 2007.

Style | The Purple JNBY Sweater

I’m a sucker for colour. Especially the colour purple (holler Oprah!).

So this electric purple sweater from JNBY called to me.

Naturally I paired it with gold (holler Lakers!).

For realz, it’s my new favourite staple. It’s light enough to layer like crazy. Polished enough to wear to work with slacks. And cool enough to wear with shorts in the spring. See? Oprah knows what’s up.

[JNBY sweater, J. Crew skirt, MNG shirt, H&M necklace]

P.S. The Anthology’s Twitter background is purple too.

Style | The Latest Scoop

A sponsored post.

Part pop-up boutique, part shopping party, the Latest Scoop is a sparkly, sequin-y treasure trove of holiday style and home décor. The three Vancouver boutiques are only open for a few more weeks so I stopped in to their West Fourth location to scout out my favourite holiday looks.

Like this one. Love, love, love the white tuxedo jacket ($79.95) and its black detailing (doesn’t get any chic-er than black and white!) and I got a little too excited about that floor-length sequin skirt (also comes in black). This look would be a stand-out at holiday parties and new year’s eve bashes. I figure when everyone else is wearing black, that’s the perfect time to show up in white. And when everyone else is wearing short, show up in long.

Or just go for sequins and be a sparkly stunner.

And if you’re, say, going to to a charity ball or an office party and you need a dress that’s a little more conservative, then top it off with bold accessories. A classic LBD calls for rainbow bracelets ($44.95).

And if you’re hosting a dinner party, I love the idea of doing so in a dress like this ($89.95). Wear an apron over top while you’re cooking and then, when dinner’s ready, reveal all that sequin drama! That, my friends, is how you earn the title of the hostess with the mostest.

The Latest Scoop Kits: 2372 West 4th Avenue. Kerrisdale: 2138 West 41st. West Vancouver: 1731 Marine Drive.

After | The mint blazer

Ta da!

You’d never guess this jacket used to be this sexy little number, would ya? Just goes to show that scrunching up the sleeves goes a long way.

And piling on the texture (via a striped t-shirt) and the colour (via a rust-coloured necklace) makes the mint seem subdued.

But the real magic was worked by my tailor who added two seems to the back to take in the extra fabric, a material so light it let in this much sunshine when I slung it over my chair this morning. Love how it highlights the texture too.

The jacket’s bright, light colour and easy, breezy fabric seems made for Miami. Or at least Vancouver’s version of Miami — the courtyard at the Burrard. Seriously, that place and that jacket seem made for each other. Maybe that’s because it’s the same colour as the doors.

P.S. It’s hot and sunny on Facebook so add The Anthology.

Style | Anna Cohen’s Wish List

Anna Cohen is one stylin’ mama. In fact, that’s exactly what inspires her blog Simply Stylish Mom. Herewith, she shares her holiday wish list.

Ok so this post is basically a ‘hint hint’ to husband but let’s just pose it as an ‘inspiration wish list for the holidays’ heheee…

1. A sexy so-not-Mommy dress for NYE like this.

2. A black biker jacket.

3. A pair of red jeans.

4. Some ‘Kate’ pumps.

5. A silk scarf like this one.

6. And a sequiny blazer (would look amazing paired with a white tee and jeans).

Ok, maybe I’m being a little too ambitious?

No such thing! These picks are gorgeous — who wouldn’t wish for them all? Thanks Anna! Stay tuned, friends, there are more super-stylin’ wish lists coming up on The Anthology!

Diary | Vancouver Fashion Showcase Wrap-Up

By Erika Renfrew

What’d you do on Sunday?  Sip pretty cocktails?  Sample mini cakes?  Or did you perform acrobatics while hanging from the ceiling?  I could never do that last one, but two out of three isn’t bad.

This weekend wrapped up the Vancouver Fashion Showcase, an event spotlighting 30 of the city’s top boutiques and retailers.  This four-day extravaganza began with a gala and runway show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. What comes after the pre-party?  More parties of course. Vancouver Fashion Showcase hosted three days of shopping with styling competitions, industry talks and exclusive discounts.

Sadly, no shopping for me!  I did attend the official wrap-up party at Canvas Lounge.  With giveaways and great music it was a night to mingle with the inspiring individuals involved, like Amy Podrasky (far left) and Marina Fernandes (centre) who volunteered to help plan the fashion shows and dress the models.

Now for the acrobatics.  I watched a strong, elastic-y woman perform an aerial dance.  She was all-smiles as she twirled mid-air; I was holding my breath that she didn’t fall.

Take part in any of the fun this weekend?  If you missed it this time around, consider this an ever-so-gentle nudge.

Bookmark | Atlantis Home

In The Anthology’s Bookmark column we explore some of the most inspiring places on the wild, wild web.

You’ve already bookmarked Sea of Shoes, right?

But have you bookmarked Atlantis Home? Run by Judy Aldridge (mother to Sea of Shoes’ Jane Aldridge) it’s one of my very favourite style/design/inspiration-filled blogs.

I love her jewelry line. I love her style — she’s mastered the art of the ladylike jacket, rock ‘n’ roll t-shirt and roughed-up jeans with funky footwear. And that’s a style that will take you from work (if you, like me, work in a creative industry) to post-work cocktails to a midnight show.

And I especially love her love of all things vintage.

So bookmark Atlantis Home already. And bookmark The Anthology while you’re at it.

Style | Blanche MacDonald

By Erika Renfrew

Like the energizer bunny, the fantastic designs just kept on coming, and coming…and coming!

Blanche Macdonald presented the Colour Couture fashion show celebrating this year’s graduates in fashion design. Over fifty students showcased their work and with more than one hundred looks it was Blanche Macdonald’s largest show ever!

The designers set no limits on their imagination and wowed the crowd with just about everything under the sun.

There were plenty of wearable pieces; cropped varsity jackets, tuxedo blouses and flirty summer dresses.  And on the other side of the spectrum? Bedazzled swimwear, architectural outerwear, an ultra-sheer suit and dress complete with steel cage.

My pick for showstopper of the night was a black satin gown by Lillian Lim.  With a train of tulle, sequin embroidery and removable hot-pink skirt, the audience got some shock value before finishing off the night.

What’s that old saying?  Less is more?  In this case I’d have to disagree.

P.S. Keep up with Erika on Twitter.
