Ugh. Daylight savings. I’m not a morning person at the best of times and I’m definitely not a morning person after we’ve lost an hour. To make matters even sleepier, I’m such a caffeine addict that an extra latte won’t do much to revive me.
In the same slow-moving boat? This power-packed smoothie will give you a little perk-me-up. It’s my own variation on the recipes created by vegan Ironman athlete Brandon Brazier. I down one almost every morning and now that we’re springing ahead, I think I’ll down two.
You’ll need:
1 cup strawberries (I use frozen berries, they’re a staple in my freezer)
1 cup raspberries
1 banana
1 apple, cut and cored
¾ tbs. fresh ginger
3 leaves raw kale, stems removed
¼ cup hemp protein
1 tbs. milled flax seeds
1½ cup water
Sweeten with a handful of grapes or — if you want to get all Gwyneth Paltrow — a dollop of agave syrup.
Dump everything into a blender and blend it like Beckham. This recipe yields quite a bit so you can either share with your roommate/boyf/mom/dude you brought home from the bar last night. Or you can store it in the fridge and drink it throughout the day. Whatever floats your (now fast-moving) boat!

[…] Coachella’s different. I haven’t been thinking about anything else since, oh I don’t know, Coachella 2011. I think it’s the sunshine, the palm trees, the State of California in general. I have a real affinity for that place. I feel at home there — probably because they wouldn’t bat a fake eyelash at my kale, hemp, and flaxseed smoothies. […]
