The Anthology

Although technically they’re paint splatters

This print reminds me of the night sky.

podolls-shirt-body-politic

And not just any night sky, but the kind you can only see when you’re away from city lights.

You know the kind — they have stars. Lots and lots of stars.

And even though this silk blouse (by the Podolls, from Body Politic) isn’t the type of thing you wear when you’re out in the middle of nowhere, it sure does make me want to go there.

P.S. If you’re way out there, can you still tweet?

I’m sweet on you

February 14th is a day we celebrate love — love of candy hearts, love of chocolate, love of chubby cherubs. Since I’m Valentine’s Day’s number one fan, I thought I’d compile a list of seven ways to get into the VDay zone. You know, in case you’re bored of romantic candle-lit dinners and bubble baths.

1. Make like you’re in grade three and send Valentines to all your friends (“If you were a nose, I’d totally pick you”).

2. Eat cinnamon hearts until your mouth’s on fire and your tongue’s dyed red.

3. Wear red and pink from head to toe. Because today there’s no such thing as clashing colours.

4. See how many sentences you can make out of candy hearts (“Awesome smile, love bird. Fax me.”).

5. Be someone’s secret admirer. Because it’s fun to keep ’em guessing.

6. Watch Romeo + Juliet for the umpteenth time. Because Baz Luhrmann is b-b-b-bad to the bone.

7. Write a love poem for your loved one (“Roses are red, violets are blue. If you were a nose, I’d totally pick you.”).

Should have worn my Tron suit

To the sneak peek of Illuminate Yaletown.

illuminate-yaletown

The party celebrated the unveiling of the art installations that will be taking over a few downtown blocks this weekend. And it was quite the affair. Mayor Gregor kicked it off, noting that it was one year ago that the Olympic torch made its way into Vancouver. (Can you believe it’s been that long?)

h-and-m-bangles

The party highlight for me? The glow-in-the-dark bracelets that served as drink tickets. They would have looked ever so cool with my H & M bangles, don’tcha think?

beaded-shirt-cuffed-pants

But instead of my illuminated Tron suit (truth: I don’t own one) I wore this.

I’d like to think that sparkly beads are kind of like the analog version of a proper lit-up ensemble.

So put on your sequins and head to Illuminate Yaletown this Saturday and Sunday. You’ll feel like part of the illuminati, even if only for a weekend.

A Day In My Life

Is featured on the lovely LA-based blog DesignLoveFest. And you better believe I worked this guy into it (nobody said it had to be a day in my real life)…

Take a look here. Thanks again, Bri!

The weird ones are the best

It’s true of documentaries (have you seen Catfish?) and vintage jackets.

woven-jacket

I have no idea where this woven wonder is from (it’s label-less) but I’d imagine it’s from some far-off land.

gold-bangles

Wore it with piles and piles of fake gold. (If fake gold were actually worth its weight in gold, I’d be a wealthy woman.)

striped-jacket

But only on warmer days. As bulky as it is, it’s not that cozy (curse you, cotton!). Which means it’s perfect for those weird spring days.

P.S. Let’s make like the subjects of Catfish and connect on Facebook, mmkay?

Ballet is everywhere right now

In Kanye West music videos. In Natalie Portman movies. And in my living room.

I missed dancing, but the thought of enrolling in a community centre class terrified me. So I did what anyone would do — went straight to Amazon.com and ordered the New York Ballet Workout DVD.

the-ballerina-project

It’s ten years old (and includes an introduction by a very blonde Sarah Jessica Parker). It takes itself very seriously (at one point the narrator says “Ballet is, for each dancer, a private affair of the soul.”). And a word to the wise — if you hated tondus and demi-pliés when you were eight, you won’t find them any more entertaining now.

But you better believe this’ll get your arabesque in shape.

[Photo from the beautiful, beautiful Ballerina Project.]

P.S. Twitter is, for each tweeter, a public affair of the soul.

A recipe for a t-shirt vest

I’m not really one for DIYing. But once in a blue moon I have a hankering for some tinkering. So the other night I pulled out the scissors and transformed an old t-shirt into a vest.

‘Tis easy. Trust me. You won’t even need to use a sewing needle. You’ll find a step-by-step guide after the jump.

There are a few perks to not clearing out your closet

One, you never suffer from donor’s remorse. And two, you’re ready to fall in love with a piece all over again. As soon as you see something slightly similar on the runway.

I fell head over heels for Roberto Cavalli’s 2011 resort collection (I think it’s the hippie in me). And one dress in particular, a porcelain blue and white boho number, reminded me of the bohemian maxi dress that’s been mine for a few years now.

Yes, the print, the colour palette and the cut are all different, but the frolic-in-a-field feeling is the same.

I found it in Barcelona when I was travelling with my girlfriends. So to track down something similar, you can head to Spain (and I highly recommend you do) or you can head to Holt Renfrew and grab the Cavalli (also a delightful voyage).

To find a bag like this, though, I’m afraid you’re going to have to go to Thailand. Any excuse to travel, right?

P.S. Shop till you (name) drop. This Saturday, January 29th and Sunday, January 30th, Lola Home and Apparel is offering all you lovely Anthologizers an additional 20% off sale merchandise. Just name-drop The Anthology at checkout and you’re golden.

Some things are guaranteed to make you happy

Like, for example, when your all-time favourite band plays a show with your new favourite band.

photo-screwup

Such was the story on Thursday night. When my all-time favourite (baby brother’s) band Wizerdz played with Vancouver-based electro-pop quintet Young Liars.

I only just discovered them. And I love them (perhaps because they sound a little Phoenix-esque).

vancouver-street-style

So much so, I trudged through a quarter inch of snow to see them. Now that’s devotion.

kd-striped-shirt

I’m afraid to look at the number of times I’ve played the song Colours — it’s been on repeat ever since I’ve discovered it.

Speaking of colours — that blue/black/purple/coral necklace is from H&M. Something else that’s guaranteed to make you happy.
