My Home for the Holidays

Christmas came really, really early at my house this year. I’m never that organized. Unless I have to be. And this year I had to be.

Canadian Tire shot a series of videos at my place to launch the new CANVAS line. So I got super festive even decorated a tree for my kid (who is way too young to appreciate it).

It’s essentially a giant tower of tinsel covered in colourful ornaments and chalkboard baubles.

Santa would totally approve. Take a look!

Give | Handmade gifts you don’t have to make yourself

I’m a big fan of handmade things. I’m just not a big fan of handmaking them. I’d much prefer someone else do that for me. So I’ve picked a few of my favourite handmade holiday gifts, all of which you can find on Etsy.

1. Peach and Gold Dish ($32.75) by Up in the Air Somewhere.

2. Pastel Drip Nesting Doll ($82.37) by Sketch Inc.

3. Harrold the Jellyfish ($73.22) by Sara Carr.

4. Aspen Magazine Holder ($140.35) by Ciseal.

5. Slip Cast Porcelain Hanging Planter ($29.74) by Bean and Bailey.

6. Tonala Pequena Zip Wallet ($60.82) by Vancouver’s own scout and catalogue.

7. Nodo Outdoor Chair ($608.19) by Petrified Design.

8. Columns Cushion Cover ($50.65) by Si Sauvage.

Now forward this to Santa — or your Secret Santa — and your holiday wish list is complete!

Put a Pin in it | Kid & Coe

The Anthology’s Put a Pin in it series does what it can to fuel your obsession with Pinterest.

I love the concept behind Kid & Coe — it’s like airbnb but with baby gates, high chairs and toy chests.

I haven’t yet stayed in any of their homes but boy, do they make me want to pack up the playard and trek across the globe.

Their Pinterest boards are as beautiful as their homes.

And some of them are quite cute to boot.

So put a pin in Kid & Coe and The Anthology too.

Etsy is the besty

Tomorrow I’ll be on The Rush sharing a few of my favourite made-in-Vancouver picks from one of my very favourite sites Etsy. These white-and-gold baby mocs by First Prints make the cut. And boy would they look cute on my little monkey’s feet.

The Cool Kids | Seraphine Tops

I had no idea what to expect when I was expecting. And I’m not just talking about exhaustion and diapers and spitup. I’m talking about my wardrobe. I had no idea that after you have a kid you’re not right back to the silk blouses and suede shorts you wore before you got knocked up. Size is a factor, obviously, but so is feeding. You don’t want anything that’s going to make things difficult. Which is why I love this sweater by Seraphine. Snaps on, snaps off. And it doesn’t look mom-y.

It’s a smart line, that Seraphine. Kate Middleton seems to think so too.

Thanks, Liv, for the photo!

You Asked | Vancouver-y Baby Gift Ideas

Sabrina writes:

I have two sets of expecting Melbournian friends, and wanted to get a nice present for them. Something sweet, something uniquely Canadian (or Vancouver!), something not plastered in moose or maple leaves, and something not too outrageously expensive. Would you have any recommendations?

Yes, yes I do! These are a few of my conceived-in-Vancouver baby gifts, though I must say, I think a moose-shaped teether would be pretty cute too.

1. I first discovered Boske Kids clothes at Ella and Elliot and fell hard for them. They’re simple, beautiful pieces that feel a little vintage and a little European.

2. When I had my baby girl I got a care package filled with Vonbon blankets, bibs and hats. And, as I mentioned before, I love them.

3. The only thing I like about winter is the fact that I get to wear my Padraig Cottage slippers. My little one got a pair as a gift from my friend Sonja whose daughter also had a pair that she wore constantly. They’re not only cozy, but their suede soles provide ample traction for little ones learning to walk on hardwood floors.

4. Native Shoes’ kid’s gear is so cute. They’re from the west coast and now you can find them all over the place. I’m partial to the rain boots because they feel extra Vancouver-y.

Hope this helps, Sabrina! Happy gift-giving!

Pinstagram | Hiking Barefoot

The Anthology’s Pinstagram column marries the dream (Pinterest) and the reality (Kelsey Dundon’s Instagram photos of places and faces in and around Vancouver).

Coulda woulda shoulda. An outfit I would wear and an outfit I did wear (with a bracelet c/o of Sarah Cameron and a clutch made of a vintage Bay blanket c/o Identity).

Hiking buddies. We couldn’t find hiking boots that fit feet that small, but she didn’t need ’em anyway. A lake that looks like it could be in British Columbia, but unlike the one I was trekking around, isn’t.

Green prints two ways. One a little more grown up than the other (from babyGap).

Signs of summer. The second-best berry (raspberries will forever have my heart) and summer blockbusters (which I never actually go to. Do you?).

Cups runneth over. A delicious beet and citrus palate cleanser at The Bird’s Nest and some palate-pleasing cocktails.

P.S. There are more photos where these came from so add The Anthology on Facebook.

Bookmark | Bleubird

In The Anthology’s Bookmark column we explore some of the most inspiring places on the wild, wild web.

It was this image (which I found on Pinterest) that first drew me to Bleubird. It’s the cutest mom and kid shot ever. Plus, I love her overalls and the little one’s onesie.

Turns out Bleubird is full of cool finds– blogger James Kicinski-McCoy runs an online vintage shop (though it’s not up at the moment) and I love the casual coolness of her picks. There’s something simple, almost rustic about them.

An aesthetic that extends to her home.

And her baking, apparently.

It’s the kind of mommy blog that you don’t have to be a mommy blog reader to love. So bookmark Bleubird already and bookmark The Anthology while you’re at it.

P.S. Beef up your list of favourite links with The Anthology’s Bookmark picks.

The Cool Kids | The Diaper Bag That Doesn’t Look Like a Diaper Bag

Mom style gets a lot of flack (thank you, Tina and Amy!). So you gotta love anything that doesn’t look too mommy, the kind of thing you’d wear even if you weren’t toting around bottles and baby wipes.

The Stockholm bag by Ikabags is one such find. It looks like a tote you’d take to the beach instead of the tot pool, yet it has compartments for all the soothers, diapers and nonsense you can no longer leave home without. Plus it’s handmade in Paris, which makes sense since you’ve never heard anyone talk smack about mère style.

The Cool Kids | The Alison Show Leather Mobiles

I’m hoping my kid grows up to appreciate beautiful handmade things instead of noisy plastic things (says the woman who thanks heaven every day for this music-making contraption). So as long as I have a say in things I’m outfitting the nursery in beauties like this leather mobile by The Alison Show (thank you, Amanda!).

It’s cool, it’s colourful and, unlike a newborn baby, it’s quiet.
