Style | Behind the Scenes of our Spring Trends Features

At home, my wardrobe is strewn with clothes thrown helter skelter. On the job, though, everything is perfectly placed/folded/wrinkled/what have you.

A lot goes into a shoot.

These are a few of the behind-the-scenes shots from a trend series I styled for The Province and Metropolis at Metrotown (thanks again, team!).

The features run Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout April in the print edition of The Province.

P.S. For behind-the-scenes shots as they happen, like The Anthology on Facebook.

Q&A | Holly Peterson, author of The Idea of Him

Holly Peterson, the New York Times bestselling author of THE MANNY, is launching a new book, The Idea of Him, this month. In this Q&A she shares the greatest mistake she made as a journalist, how money can make you insane and why she didn’t want to end her book with a kiss from Colin Firth.
Why did you write this book?

I wanted to write about the phenomenon of falling in love with the “idea” of someone versus the reality of the actual person across the dinner table from us. I think it’s something we all have done. Once we are in a relationship, sometimes we delude ourselves into being happy, yet something doesn’t feel quite right. When reality hits, we must confront our fears of being on our own, and that can be frightening. Our fears of being on our own often propel us into staying with the wrong person.

I know I’ve personally fallen for the “idea” of someone numerous times because I have an idea in my head of what I want that person to be and how I’ll feel with him: the cool guy with the long hair will make me cool, the stable, appropriate guy will make me feel safe…I even fell for a Frenchman over how his cashmere blazer felt on my cheek! All that stuff doesn’t count in the end: the only thing that matters in my mind when it comes to love is an accompanying true friendship and deep intimacy.

Style | Spring Fashion Features in The Province

It’s a jungle out there. And in here. I spent the last few days shooting a spring style series for The Province at Metropolis at Metrotown. In this particular shot we’re shooting part of a very jungly, very tropical, very floral spread. There will be eight in total, all of them running in April.

I haven’t even counted how many pieces we shot. But it was a lot. Trust. And I can’t wait to see the finished product!

[First photo by Vanessa Choot for Metropolis at Metrotown — thank you!]

Diary | Pre-fall Trend Forecast on Global TV

I don’t have a crystal ball. But I do have runway photos. And they can tell me a lot about your future, or at least your closet’s future.

I stopped by Global BC on Friday to talk about some of the biggest trends for summer and pre-fall (my favourite non-season season). My favourites? Long ladylike skirts, short culottes and luxe lace. I see a lot of them in your future.

Thanks for having me, Global Television and Metropolis at Metrotown! And thanks, Jaclyn, for the photo!

Style | Last-minute Gift Ideas

So you’ve still got some shopping to do? Me too. I like to think it’s not a matter of procrastinating, but of being a deadline-driven person.

When I stopped by CTV to share some of my favourite last-minute gift ideas from Park Royal, neither Mike Killeen nor Perry Solkowski believed me when I said I still had a million gifts to get. And that was four days ago. Here I am on Christmas Eve and I still haven’t finished holiday shopping.

If you’re in the same boat (or if you’re looking for something to spend your gift cards on), may I recommend these picks from Anthropologie, Sephora, Lush and J.Crew?

You’ll find all the details in the clip.

Happy shopping and even happier holidays!

What to Watch, Stream and Read Over the Holidays

In her latest post, Katie Burnett fills your holidays with culture.

Films Worth Braving the Weather to See

American Hustle

You had me at Jennifer Lawrence’s hair. But I’ll also go for Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner in this black comedy of con artists and bell bottoms.

The Wolf of Wall Street

I’ll always go when it’s Martin Scorsese and/or Leonardo DiCaprio, but having read the book the film is based on, I am very excited for crazy debauchery and the wild ride it will surely be.

Inside Llewyn Davis

OK spoiler, I’ve already seen this but I will 100% go again when it is widely released. I assumed this film would have all the answers to life, and it pretty much did. It’s beautiful and wonderful and sad and heartbreaking and the music is phenomenal. You’ll be buying the soundtrack from your smartphone before you’ve left the movie theatre.

To Read

Plan B by Jonathan Tropper

I absolutely LOVED Jonathan Tropper’s book This is Where I Leave You but I wasn’t so hot on One Last Thing Before I Go. But, I’m going back to the beginning and reading his first book, about a group of friends reuniting and debauchery ensues.

The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp

Yes it’s a YA book and no I haven’t grown out of them. A lovely story of romance and friendship, and incredibly well written. (And once you’ve finished the book you can check out the film version with Shailene Woodley!)

After Henry by Joan Didion

I should have had you at Joan Didion. That is all you need to know. She’s just beyond. This is a collection of political essays, and they’re all fascinating.

To Stream on Netflix

Smashed with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron “Jesse Pinkman” Paul

They’re married. They’re alcoholics. It’s Jesse Pinkman. Just watch it.

Winter’s Bone with Jennifer Lawrence

I saw this in theatres a few years ago but it was so chilling and masterful it’s stayed with me ever since. I am definitely re-watching it this Christmas.

Spiral, TV Series

There’s four seasons of what can only be described as my absolute favourite French TV series of all time. It’s a detective series but like none you’ve never seen before. The characters, the stories, the hot French men and women – it’s phenomenal and exciting.

And, as a bonus, my favourite holiday movie of all time (nope, not Elf but that’s up there!)…..

Little Women with Winona Ryder

I mean. Look at them. Look at the snow. Look at their smiles. It’s perfect and you know you want to re-watch it.

Thanks, Katie!

Diary | My 12 Days of Entourage

Party season is the best season. After Jackson-Triggs  sent me a case of their Entourage Sparkling Wine (thanks, guys!) I brought bottles of cheer with me everywhere. And I’ve got the pictures to prove it. Clockwise from top left:

A special delivery.

My nose-less face, before a night of party-hopping and bottle-popping.

Adding some raspberries and calling it a cocktail.

Making mandarin mimosas by hand (totally worth the effort, by the way).

Sparkling wine-infused caramels, custom-made by 1up caramels.

Toasting the $5.3 million raised on Timmy’s Telethon.
