Ballet is everywhere right now

In Kanye West music videos. In Natalie Portman movies. And in my living room.

I missed dancing, but the thought of enrolling in a community centre class terrified me. So I did what anyone would do — went straight to Amazon.com and ordered the New York Ballet Workout DVD.

It’s ten years old (and includes an introduction by a very blonde Sarah Jessica Parker). It takes itself very seriously (at one point the narrator says “Ballet is, for each dancer, a private affair of the soul.”). And a word to the wise — if you hated tondus and demi-pliés when you were eight, you won’t find them any more entertaining now.

But you better believe this’ll get your arabesque in shape.

P.S. Twitter is, for each tweeter, a public affair of the soul.

Absolutely. I (happily) blame Black Swan. I gave up on ballet before I was any good at it; haha, what a quitter I am.

The Kanye West video for Runaway uses a large dose of ballerinas… they also accompanied him on stage for his SNL performances – both before Black Swan opened for wide release. He probably saw it at a film fest and thought to incorporate it into the visuals for his recent record. That dude’s always got his finger on the pulse.

How is the workout dvd? I’ve looked at it dozens of times in the past but never tried it…

and I’ve totally pulled ballet inspired fashion into my wardrobe after the propensity of ballerina’s in fashion this fall/winter

I’ve done the NYC Ballet Workout DVDs… I believe there are two. They are fabulous. I’m such a dork that I love the dancer bios at the end. I took ballet when I was younger, and my teacher believed in memorized classes, so the repetition is comforting!

omg i want that video. I remember all those afternoons of dance recitals and the excitement over getting the big production’s final costumes. Hours at the bar that I relished. i even tried to go back to taking dancing lessons when I was in uni but, well, that didn’t work out.
